As soon as they walked into the room, everything looked normal at first. Vance, the head of the family, always sat at the center. Danica, his litle princess, always sat right beside him. Cassia usually sat at the far end of the table, as far from him as possible.
But today, something was off.
“The moment Vance sat down, he lifted a hand and called out, “Cassia, come sit next to me.”
The words themselves weren’t strange. But coming from Vance and directed at Cassia, they were shocking for all.
This was the same man who used to dislike her for simply breathing in his direction. How could he suddenly switch personalities like a switch? It felt unreal.
Danica stared at her dad, wondering if he had hit his head. Why would he say something like that out of the blue? Wasn’t she his little darling?
She always sat next to him. Why would he give her seat away today to Cassia? He was out of character, and it was infuriating.
If Vance had asked Brie to sit there, she might not have been this mad. But Cassia? That felt like a punch to the gut.
Cassia was stunned too. Her brows pinched together as she pondered whether this was some kind of trap.
She knew Vance well enough to understand he only cared about profit. He had always treated her with coldness and annoyance. Now he was suddenly warm and friendly?
Yeah, right. When someone acts nice for no reason, they’re usually up to something.
But what could he gain from her? She had nothing to offer him. So Cassia walked over and pulled out a chair that was near him but not next to him. She said calmly, “I’ll sit here.”
She sat down before he could protest.
Vance frowned a little. Clearly, she still kept her distance from her old man.
But that was okay. He didn’t want to scare her off
If he wanted to fix things, he had to move slowly
So he forced a gentle smile and said, “Alright then. Cassia, sit down and relax. Order anything you want. Don’t hold back. We’re family. No need to be shy.”

Honestly, Vance had been acting weird since they arrived. Everyone was already used to it by now. There was nothing to surprise.
Danica was burning with jealousy, but she couldn’t say anything. If she complained, her dad would scold her again.
Still, everyone was curious. Why was Vance acting like this? He wasn’t acting like himself.
Cassia had questions too, but she kept her expression steady. She just needed to wait. Soon enough, she’d find out what Vance was planning
When the server came in to take orders, Vance asked Cassia about every single dish. “Cassia, do you like this? How about this one? Do you want to try this?”
Everyone else was losing their patience.
Especially Danica; she was so close to standing up and walking out.
Dad, seriously? This is way too much. Could you be any more obvious? The favoritism is
insane.
“Dad, I want salmon. I don’t like halibut,” Danica said as soon as she heard Vance order the fish.
Vance didn’t even lift his head. “Next time we’ll get salmon. Cassia likes halibut, so we’re having this today.”
His words hit Danica like a bucket of ice water dumped right over her head.
She stared at her father, shocked, wondering if she had heard him wrong.
Was this really the same dad who always spoiled her?
Was Cassia his real child? Was she the one who had been picked up off the street?
Danica puffed her cheeks in frustration, looking hurt.
Brie gently patted her hand, trying to comfort her.
When the dishes arrived, Vance was unusually warm toward Cassia–serving her food, ladling
and acting like she was the guest of honor
soup,
Cassia frowned a little and finally said, “That’s enough. I can’t eat that much.”
Vance chuckled and said, “You’re still growing. Don’t act like those girls; skip meals just to lose weight.”

Cassia nodded lightly and continued eating.

Vance watched her carefully. Once she seemed most done, he set down his fork. Then he looked at her and asked cautiously, “Cassia, I saw you at Cosmo Group the other day. Do you know Ms. Lanc?”
Cassia’s hand paused. Inside, she let out a dry laugh. So this was why Vance was being so kind today.
He wanted a connection to Cosmo Group. Someone must have told him she was close to Nicole, and now he was here to test her. How predictable.
Cassia pressed her lips together and answered calmly, “I’ve met her a few times, but we’re not close. She’s a businesswoman; I’m a high schooler. We don’t really know each other well.”
Everything she said sounded reasonable, so reasonable that no one
could argue.
She lowered her eyes and continued eating.
The moment Vance heard that, his face darkened instantly. It was like watching someone flip a switch.
Hmph. Of course it was too good to be true. How could a girl from some small backwater place know someone that powerful?
And Mark–what was he thinking? He’d been in business for years, but he couldn’t even tell if something made sense?
Still, Vance wasn’t ready to give up. “Do you have her number? Help me make a connection. The company urgently needs a partnership with Cosmo Group.”
