Laurel opened the pouch and froze. Inside were dozens of spirit stones, heavy in her hands, glittering like multicolored gems and dazzling her eyes.
“All of these are for me?” she asked in surprise. She took out a green spirit stone and said, “Wait, there are green ones in here too. You should use these to treat the sick.”
“No need.” He didn’t take it. “You’re a female. You need green spirit stones to nourish your body.”
Laurel picked up a green stone about the size of an egg and wondered how she was supposed to use it. Swallow it whole?
Sebastian stood up, ready to leave. “I’ll go now. Wait for me to come back.”
Laurel hurriedly grabbed a corner of the hide at his waist. “Wait. Take me with you. I might be able to help.”
He frowned. “The sickness spreads easily. The sick cubs have all been moved to an empty cave on the back mountain for treatment. You’re too delicate. What if you get infected?”
“I know herbs too.” Before Sebastian could refuse again, Laurel quickly put the spirit stones away among the hides and pushed him toward the cave entrance. “I really can help.”
When his expression still didn’t soften, she switched to coaxing. “Please, Sebastian. Don’t leave me alone in the cave, okay?”
Sebastian sighed helplessly. “Fine. But once we’re there, don’t touch the cubs.”
He couldn’t bear to refuse. Laurel’s voice was far too soft.
Sebastian shifted into beast form and carried Laurel on his back. A silver blur flashed past as they raced toward the back mountain.
In the cave on Back Mountain, the air was filled with the bitter, herbal scent of medicine. A frail old woman was sitting cross-legged in front of a stone furnace, stirring a pot of simmering broth on the stove.
Her head of silver hair was loosely tied with a beast bone, a few wisps falling over her wrinkled forehead and trembling with the rising steam.
She wore a snow-white deerskin dress, washed until it gleamed. A string of dried medicinal fruit hung at the collar, rustling softly as she moved.

Wrinkles traced deep lines from the corners of her eyes to her temples, etched with time.
Yet her ice-blue eyes were astonishingly clear, like a sacred lake in the snow mountains, calm and full of compassion.
“Sebastian.” She suddenly looked up, her voice hoarse but gentle.
“Shaman healer, I brought back the spirit stones,” Sebastian said, stepping forward.
“Good child. You’re back.” Her wrinkled eyes filled with emotion. She grasped Sebastian’s hands and patted them hard, her voice trembling. “You’re back safely. That’s what matters.”
She had been here for more than 20 days.
Every treatment she knew had been tried, but the infected cubs only grew worse. Their skin had turned gray, their breathing faint.
“These green stones are our last hope,” she said, choking up. “If we’d been any later, the cubs wouldn’t have made it.”
The shaman healer picked up several herbs and ground them into powder in a stone bowl.
As soon as clear water was poured in, she gently dropped in a green spirit stone and murmured an ancient chant.
As the fire boiled the mixture, the spirit stone melted like ice, dissolving into a bowl of rippling green liquid. A soft green glow flowed across the surface, as if touched by moonlight.
Laurel watched in quiet awe. A solid spirit stone had melted away just like that. Was this magic?
The shaman healer carefully lifted a dying cub and slowly fed the green potion into his
mouth.
The moment the liquid slid down his throat, his gray skin began to glow with a strange jade
hue.
The dull, lifeless gray faded, lightening little by little until it returned to a healthy wheat tone.
“Whimper.”
With a weak cry, the cub’s chest began to rise and fall. His tiny hands clutched at the shaman healer’s skirt, tears slipping from the corners of his tightly shut eyes.
“Beast God above.” Tears streamed down the shaman healer’s face. “They’re saved. They’re finally saved.”
