When he stayed home, they stuck together constantly, inseparable and affectionate, always finding endless things to talk about.
When he went out to work, she tidied the cave and practiced using bone needles and gut thread to sew clothes for him.
Their days passed in calm contentment, sweetness hidden in small details, just like any ordinary young couple in the human world.
That day, Sebastian brought back a curly haired beast.
Its fleece was pure white and tightly curled, and Sebastian planned to use the hide to make a winter coat for his little female.
The moment Laurel saw the curly beast, her eyes shone and she nearly drooled.
It was as big as a yak, but no matter how she looked at it, was this not a sheep?
“Sebastian, have you heard of hotpot?” Laurel licked her lips, excitedly gesturing the rolled meat.

Sebastian lowered his gaze with a smile and brushed her dark hair. “Maybe tonight I’ll finally find out what it’s like.”
He went to the river to deal with the meat and tan the hide.
Normally he discarded the offal in the wild, but today, at her request, he kept the liver.
He noticed some shell backed water creatures in the river that matched Laurel’s description of shrimp, so he caught several and wrapped them together with the meat and hide to carry home.
Laurel already boiled a pot of water in the cave and added scallions, garlic, and a few nourishing herbs.
She cleaned and chopped wild vegetables, mushrooms, corn, and potatoes.
She also roasted yams and prepared a dessert.
Everything was ready, missing only one final detail.
“If only we had syrup, this would be perfect.” Laurel swallowed, sounding a little regretful.

“Laurel, I’m back. Look at these. Are they the shrimp you talked about?” Sebastian opened the hide, showing prepared meat and offal along with a pile of dark red shell backed water
creatures.
“Whoa! Crayfish! These are incredible!” Her eyes sparkled instantly.
“Sebastian, you’re amazing. You caught so many!
“You’re so thoughtful. You remembered after I mentioned it once.”
She bounced with joy, clinging to his arm and praising him nonstop.
Sebastian’s ears flushed pink. His face stayed calm, but his unseen tail nearly wagged itself loose.
His little female was gentle and adorable.
Every word she said carved itself into his heart.
Laurel sliced the meat thin and cut the offal into bite sized cubes.
She heated a stone pan, oiled it, and stir fried the crayfish with minced garlic and lantern peppers, finishing with a sprinkle of salt.
Soon, a pot of fragrant crayfish was done.
With bowls and cutleries ready, they started the hotpot.
The meat cooked quickly, tender and juicy, carrying a clean herbal flavor that was rich without being heavy.
Sebastian kept eating without pause.
Laurel ate a few slices of lamb and felt it grew too filling, so she switched to wild greens and
mushrooms.
The vegetables cooked almost instantly, fresh and crisp.
She picked up some greens and placed them in Sebastian’s bowl. “Try this. It balances the heaviness of the meat.”
Sebastian stared at it, baffled, but Laurel served him food, so he ate it happily.
When Laurel was almost full, she pan-seared the lamb liver on a stone slab.

The small cubes browned lightly on each side and dusted with salt, and she held one to his lips.
“Try it.”
Sebastian tensed with nerves, opened obediently, and took the bite.
