“Water it every day… do you think it’ll survive? It should be like growing flowers, right?” She crouched by the edge of the plot, murmuring to herself.

The sunlight warmed her back, cozy and gentle. She shut her eyes and basked in it.

In this beast world, she felt herself relaxing a little more each day, as if she had returned to the girl from peaceful times, free, slightly willful, soft and attached, savoring life.

There was no need to tiptoe around others’ tempers anymore, no need to face a cold world on her own.

Her thoughts drifted to the days before she crossed over, trapped in the underground base, spending 16 hours a day either hungry or learning how to cater to people, controlled by the organization.

She lived in a concrete cell barely three square meters wide, buried underground, with only a faint strip of light seeping through a skylight.

One day, she spotted a tiny jade green flower quietly blooming from a crack in the wall.

She saved ten milliliters of water from her daily ration to nourish it, treating it as her lone companion in wartime, her only comfort.

“And now, all that suffering is over. Sebastian gave me a life that’s warm and sweet.”

Thinking of Sebastian, Laurel bit her lip and smiled, recalling how awkward he looked when he focused on sewing.

He had just made her two new outfits, a soft yellow fur set and a pink-and-white patterned top with a short skirt, the kind all the females in the tribe loved.

He must have measured her carefully while she slept, then chosen the right beasts when he went out, crafting clothes that were bright and fit her perfectly, though his stitches were a little rough. His affection was careful, shy, and youthful.

Lately, Sebastian stayed home more and more. Every day after dealing with tribe matters, he brought fresh prey straight back.

His friend Danny hooked an arm around his shoulders and joked, “Who is this? The used to hate females the most.

“Hey, looks like your future little wife has you wrapped around her finger!

“Come on, introduce her to me. I’m paying you back for every time wife!”

Sebastian shot Danny a cold glare. “You like staying alive, right?”

Then he turned and headed home.

Once he returned, he saw his Laurel.

He loved this life, where love blended into ordinary days, delicate and gentle, repeating again and again without growing dull.

Before the morning mist faded, Sebastian already stood quietly by the stream.

His silver white wolf tail brushed against grass damp with dew. He fixed his gaze on the fish darting through the water, an ice blade forming at his fingertips, and in one strike, three plump fish pinned neatly to the shore.

“Extra dish today.” Laurel beamed as she took the basket from him, her fingers accidentally grazing the calluses on his palm.

Sebastian’s ear tips flicked. He turned away as if nothing happened. “I handle it. Don’t let the smell cling to you.”

“No way.” The little female laughed and nudged him aside. “If you cook, our extra dish is gone.”

Soon, a mouthwatering aroma drifted from the fire.

Sebastian leaned against the stone wall, watching her move about, the bright blue in his eyes softening.

He had secretly practiced cooking, burning three stone pots black. Danny laughed at him for an entire week.

“Taste the salt?” She suddenly spun around, lifting a ladle to his mouth.

Sebastian lowered his head and sipped. “Good.”

He could not understand it. It was the simplest fish soup, yet it tasted fresh and sweet. When he made it, it turned out black.

In the afternoon sun, Sebastian shifted into beast form and sprawled on the slate beside the pond.

Laurel rested her head against him, fingers combing through his fur. She noticed a scar on his right ear. “How did you get that?”

“Fighting rogue beastmen,” Sebastian replied casually, though his tail quietly curled around her ankle. “They ended up worse.”

“Huh? Then what about that small cut on your tail tip?”

“Danny bit me when we were fooling around as kids.”

“Seriously? Did you bite him back?”

“No.” Sebastian’s wolf muzzle lifted into a faint smile. “I beat him until he cried. He behaves

now.”

Laurel felt a hint of sadness. Sebastian had a friend from childhood. She had never had friendships that lasted.
