Venus suddenly said, pretending to realize something, “Oh, so you knew that killer? You’re trying to cover for him, aren’t you?”

Her words instantly turned every onlooker’s attention to Neil.

Their suspicious stares made the back of his neck prick. Furious, he barked, “Venus! What nonsense are you talking about?”

He did recognize the driver as Vienna’s younger brother

But what did that have to do with Venus?

Why did she have to stir up trouble?

If Vienna ever found out that his sister had taken the lead in beating up her brother in public, what would she think of him?

Frustration boiled inside Neil. He reached out to grab Venus, trying to drag her to the car and away from the crowd.

But Venus didn’t even look at him. She turned and walked toward the roadside.

Neil assumed she was heading home, so he didn’t follow He got in the car and rushed to the hospital instead.

At the roadside, a little girl stood alone, confused and frightened. She had tried to stop several passersby, but no one paid attention to her.

Her head hung low as she whispered, “Where’s my mom? Where did she go?”

“Hey, sweetheart,” Venus said softly, crouching down to meet her eyes. “I’ll take you to your mom.”

“Really?” The girl, only five years old, burst into tears when someone finally talked to her.

“I don’t know where my mom went. I’m so cold and scared.”

Venus took her tiny, icy hand and led her toward her vehicle parked nearby.

As for Oliver, beaten black and blue, he was taken to the hospital by the authorities who had just arrived,

Hospital.

Meanwhile, the mother injuries were far more serious. She had already been in surgery for nearly four

hours.

Neil came out of the emergency room, peeling off his bood-stained surgical gown. The moment he stepped into the hallway, he saw Venus sitting quietly of a bench.

His brows furrowed. “Why are you still here? Don’t you have somewhere else to be?” His tone was sharp and impatient.

Venus asked calmly. “How did the surgery go?”

“You mean that woman?” Neil asked, taken aback. “Her Head took a heavy hit. We managed to save her, but

whether she wakes up depends on her willpower. If she couldn’t, she’d be in a coma for life. Why do you even care? Stop meddling where you shouldn’t.”

“Dr. Burn, the director wants to see you,” Rowan called from down the hall.

Neil clearly wanted to scold Venus again, but he just muttered, “Get lost.” After that, he hurried away toward the office.

Rowan walked over, looking puzzled. “Ms. Burn? What are you doing here?”

Venus asked, “Which room did they move the woman from the accident into?”

Rowan answered honestly, “The ICU. They’ll keep her under observation for a few days.”

“Dr. Hill,” Venus said softly, “could you take me there for a moment?” She could feel the tiny hand she was holding grow colder by the second.

Rowan smiled. “Sure, but you can only look from outside. No one’s allowed in.”

“Okay.”

They stopped outside the glass wall. Inside, the little girl saw her mother lying motionless on the bed, tubes covering her fragile body. She burst into tears.

“Mom! Mom, what’s wrong with you?!”

She broke free from Venus’s hand, ran straight through the glass wall, and reached for her mother’s face- only for her hand to pass right through.

“I can’t touch my mom anymore.” The little girl sobbed so hard her shoulders shook. “Is Mom dead? Like my dad?”

Venus let out a long sigh.

Rowan, standing beside her, looked puzzled. “You know this woman?”

“No,” Venus said quietly.

“Oh, well, her life is tragic,” Rowan went on, his tone turing heavy. “I just came from the director’s office. They said her name is Ava Clayton. She’s a single mom. Her husband died in a car crash two years ago. The other driver paid her 800,000 dollars in compensation but her in-laws took it all. They didn’t give her a penny and kicked both her and her daughter out of the house.”

He shook his head. “Her family’s from far away. She has said a married woman is no longer part of the family. S
