“Dr. Hill,” Venus said, staring at him. “Do you believe in ghosts?”

A chill crawled down Rowan’s spine. He let out a nervous laugh.. “Come on, don’t start that. This is the ICU. You know how many people die here every day?”

The way she was looking at him made his skin crawl.

He tried to run away, but Venus caught his sleeve.

“Hmm, I’ve got a consultation to attend-” He tried to pull away.

He didn’t want to hear any of her weird talk.

Venus smiled. “This isn’t the right place to talk, Dr. Hill. Let’s go to your office. I have something important to discuss.”

“What important thing-hey! Don’t pull on my coat! What’s wrong with you?”

But she dragged him along anyway, straight back to his office.

Bang!

The door shut behind them.

Rowan froze. The office was oddly cold even though the air conditioner wasn’t on.

“Okay,” he said nervously, “what did you want to tell me You’re freaking me out.”

Venus met his gaze. “The little girl who died in that car crash is right here.”

“What?” Rowan’s face went pale. He tried to laugh, but it came out shaky. “That’s not funny, Ms. Burn. Don’t joke about things like that.”

Venus turned to the empty air beside her and spoke softly. “Sweetheart, can you think about how you looked when you were at your prettiest?”

The little girl was still trapped in the image of her death Her head split open, her face covered in blood. If Rowan saw her like that, he’d probably have a heart attak.

The girl sniffled and nodded. Gradually, her wounds vanished, her face returning to what it had been before the accident.

Only then did Venus pull out a small spray bottle and sitz it straight into Rowan’s eyes.

He jumped back. “Hey! What the heck did you just spray on me?”

“Gravewater,” Venus said calmly.

Before he could finish, a faint figure began to appear in the corner of the room. The shape solidified into a little girl.

Rowan’s eyes bulged. He let out a curse and dropped straight to the floor.

Venus had already expected that and caught him from behind before he hit his head.

His face was as pale as paper.

Venus sighed.

“Figures. I knew you scared easy, but not this easy.”

“Dr. Hill?” She patted his face several times until he blinked awake.

“OMG! There’s a ghost!” he shouted, trembling.

Venus said darkly, “Lower your voice. You’ll frighten her She’s just a child.”

Rowan glanced toward the corner, where the girl stood quietly with tears streaking her cheeks. He clamped a hand over his mouth and whispered, “Ms. Burn, am I dreaming?”

Venus smiled faintly. “Want me to slap you so you’ll know?”

“No, no! I believe you!” Rowan straightened up, rubbing his stinging cheek, still in disbelief. “I can’t believe it! Ghosts are real, and she’s standing right in front of me. If I wrote a paper about this, I’d probably win a global science award.”

Venus pressed a hand to her forehead. “Focus, Dr. Hill. We’ve got more important things to do.”

“Right, right-let’s get to business!” Rowan rubbed his hands together, looking oddly excited. “So, what do we do? Help her cross over or something? I’ve never done this before. What’s the process again?”

Venus blinked. “What?”

“Her mom’s still in the ICU,” Venus said flatly. “She’s not but of danger yet.”

“Oh,” Rowan realized, a bit deflated. “So you mean … she wants me to save her mom?”

“I have skills, I do,” Rowan replied calmly. “But her injuries are too severe. Even if she pulls through, she’ll most likely end up in a coma.”

The little girl’s face went pale. She started crying. “Miss is he saying my mom can’t be saved?”

Her sobs made Rowan panic. He waved his hands helplessly. “No, no, that’s not what I meant! Being in a coma isn’t the same as dying. Well, kind of similar, but ot really! It’s like sleeping! Yeah, just a long sleep! And, uh, why do you call her ‘Miss’ but call me doctor? In a few years older than her, call me Rowan instead!”

The girl cried even harder.

Rowan was about to lose it himself. “Ms. Burn, please do something! Say something! Make her stop!”

Venus gently lifted the little girl and held her close. “Your mom isn’t dead,” she said softly. “The one who
