Chapter 72 A Mother’s Despair

“Miss, did I die?” The little girl suddenly stopped crying She tilted her head, looking confused.

Venus nodded gently. “Yes. Are you afraid?”

The girl blinked in confusion and shook her head. “Mom said when Dad died, we couldn’t see him anymore. If I’m dead, does that mean I can see him now?”

“If your dad’s still in the Underworld, you can,” Venus said gently. “And even if you can’t see him, he’s always in your heart.”

The girl’s face crumpled, and tears spilled down her cheeks. “Then Mom won’t see me anymore? I don’t want that. She’ll cry if she can’t find me. Bohoo!”

Venus crouched down, her voice soft and calm. “I can help your mom see you.”

“Really?” The girl’s eyes lit up with hope, tears still glistening in them.

Venus turned to Rowan.

He looked confused. “Me?”

“Her mother’s still unconscious,” Venus explained. “Her soul is trapped inside her body. I can temporarily let it leave, just for a short while.”

Rowan stared, stunned. “You can do that? Make her soul leave her body?”

He muttered under his breath, “You really are a witch like Drake said, huh?”

Venus arched an eyebrow. “He called me a witch?”

Rowan coughed, flustered. “Not exactly. He said you were that gifted mentee of an oracle that his grandpa recommended. The witch part… was my idea.” He quickly changed the subject. “So, uh, what do you need me to do?”

“It’s simple,” Venus said. “Take this sigil and place it on her mother’s hand.”

Rowan hesitated. “Are you kidding? If the hospital director finds out, I’ll get chewed out.”

“It’ll only take a few seconds,” Venus assured him. “Just hold it in her palm and pull it back right after. This sigil will wake her sleeping soul. It won’t hurt her or you

Rowan still looked doubtful.

“Please, doctor… No, Rowan,” the girl sniffled, looking up at him with tearful eyes. “Can I see my mom? Please?”

Rowan finally gave in. His heart softened, and he agreed to place the sigil in Ava’s hand.

Before doing it, he even sterilized the parchment carefly, just in case.

When the parchment touched Ava’s palm, Rowan clearly saw her fingers twitch.

A cold breeze swept past him, slipping out of the room.

He didn’t see anything, but that was enough for him to olt straight back to his office.

Once inside, he froze. Ava’s spirit was already there, sobbing and holding her daughter tightly.

The sight affected him deeply, causing tears to stream down his face.

“This is so freaking touching!” Rowan bawled, wiping his tears all over Venus’s shoulder.

“Stop it, or I’ll break your fingers,” Venus warned flatly.

He sniffled. “But it’s so beautiful! Don’t you feel it too?”

Venus said nothing but gave him a long, deadly stare.

That was not a good excuse to use her jacket as a tissue.

“Ms. Oracle,” Ava whispered, clutching her daughter, her eyes hollow, “thank you for letting me see Mia. I don’t want to live anymore. I just want to be with my little girl.”

Venus spoke calmly, her tone firm but kind. “Your daughter’s time has come, but yours hasn’t. You still have decades left. If you give up now, that’s suicide. In the underworld, that’s a serious sin. If you do that, you might never see your daughter again.”

Ava broke down, crying so hard it hurt to watch.

“What am I supposed to do? Mia was my only reason to live. With her gone, I have nothing left. Why won’t God let a mother and daughter be together, even in death?”
