They had done it five times that night. It had been the first time for both of them.

Bianca had been trembling in pain, but he hadn't stopped.

He realized now why he had never been able to recall the details of that night. His mind had likely repressed the memory out of guilt for hurting her.

He drew in a sharp breath. Compared to the suffocating control he had subjected her to during their marriage, the trauma of that first night was just the beginning.

He knew Bianca was likely asleep, but he couldn't stop himself from sending her a text: [I know you hate my guts. I finally remembered what happened that night five years ago. I am so sorry.]

Aside from apologizing, he didn't know what else to say.

Bianca saw the message when she woke up but didn't reply.

It was better for them to cut contact entirely. Yet, shortly after, Mathis was already knocking on her door.

Maggie opened it, and Mathis walked straight to the dining table and sat down.

Bianca noted his exhausted, haggard face. The drug really had done a number on him. As for how he had managed to survive the night, she had zero interest in finding out.

"Why didn't you save me last night?" Mathis asked quietly.

"We're getting a divorce," Bianca replied, her tone completely detached. "I have no obligation to save you."

"I know. You don't care if I live or die anymore," Mathis said, his voice laced with sorrow.

Bianca shot him a look. "Glad we're on the same page."

"I came here to tell you that Rosalind was the one who ordered Lamont to attack you, not Cynthia," Mathis explained.

Bianca sneered, staring hard at him. After a long silence, she finally spoke.

"And? Are you telling me this so I know Cynthia is innocent and you plan on letting her off the hook? It's fine. I'm used to you protecting her no matter what she does. You don't need to explain yourself to me."

Mathis took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. For some reason, he couldn't stop himself from getting defensive around her.

"That's not what I meant. I'm saying Cynthia is going to rat out Rosalind to the police, and I'm not going to stop her."

Bianca was genuinely surprised that he wasn't protecting his family this time.

"Fine, I get it. Just don't expect me to thank you. Everything you do is just paying off the massive debt you owe me."

"You're right," Mathis agreed. "I owe you. You can make me pay it back however you want."

Bianca remembered him begging her not to destroy him yesterday. He certainly didn't have the leverage to stop her anyway, so she figured she might as well extort some benefits for Aveline.

"Draft a legal agreement transferring two-thirds of all your assets to Aveline. Do that, and I'll stop figuring out ways to ruin your life."

Mathis let out a dry laugh. She really was completely devoted to their daughter.

He thought to himself, 'When I finally win you back, we're definitely having another kid, and this deal would be totally unfair to our second child.'

"No. One-third."
