He carefully reminded Marcus about everything, worried he would not take proper care of Claire.

The second Marcus grabbed the bamboo flask, he knew what was inside. The container was warm in his hands, and a rich scent slipped through the lid.

It was a recovery soup.

The broth had been simmered for three whole days without stopping. Pork bones, deer antler, nourishing meat, and all kinds of herbs had been cooked down together into something both healing and delicious.

It was precisely the kind of food a female needed after giving birth.

Marcus instantly realized Zane must have prepared this a long time ago. And honestly, Zane’s cooking was far better than his own. Marcus had only caught a faint smell, yet he already felt hungry.

That alone was enough to show how deeply Zane cared about Claire.

Instead of feeling jealous, Marcus felt relieved. Claire truly had good mates by her side. Still, confusion flickered across his face.

“You’re not going to see Claire?”

Zane inhaled slowly. Of course he wanted to see her. Right now, more than anything, he wanted to hold Claire tightly in his arms.

But he could not. Not yet. For now, he could only leave Claire in Marcus’s care. It was not time for them to meet yet.

“For now, no. And don’t tell her Rufus and I already entered the city. She only needs to focus on resting and recovering.”

He knew Claire had plenty of food and supplies stored away in her storage space. She would not suffer. Even so, he still could not stop himself from making this soup for her.

Marcus definitely would not spend days cooking something so complicated.

Marcus nodded without asking more questions.

Holding the thermos in his hand, he breathed in the rich scent again. He lifted it closer to his nose and took a deep sniff, silently praising Zane’s skills.

Just as he prepared to leap back over the wall, he suddenly paused. He spun around and frowned at Zane.

“How did you know Finlay’s people lured me away before?”

Thinking back on it now still made Marcus uneasy. If Zane had not found him outside the city, he might not have returned in time.

And if that had happened, Claire-while in labor-could have been dragged off somewhere unknown. Marcus did not even want to imagine what Finlay might have done to her.

But one thing still bothered him. Why was Finlay so obsessed with Claire?

It made no sense.

Finlay already had over a dozen females. Whether they came from nearby tribes or Grimstone itself, once he took an interest in someone, she usually became part of his household soon after.

Still, he normally did not use force. He rarely pressured women into staying with him.

But Claire was different. Again and again, he targeted her. His desire for her was far stronger than it had ever been for anyone else.

Was it really only because of her beauty?

Or was there another reason he absolutely had to have her?

Marcus fell silent, lost in thought. Snow blew wildly through the night as Zane stood tall beneath the storm.

“I’ve been secretly watching this area,” he said quietly. “After the beastfolk who brought you the message left, he went straight to the Grimstone Manor. Soon after that, groups of beastfolk started coming out.”

The moment Zane realized their target was Claire, he immediately rushed off to find Marcus.

Luckily, he was fast enough. He found Marcus before those beastfolk could reach Claire.

“As for Rufus, I sent him somewhere else,” Zane added.

“I couldn’t show myself openly, so I could only hurry you back. Right now, staying hidden gives me the advantage. Finlay won’t guard against me if he thinks I’m not here.”

Marcus finally understood. He had been too focused on staying beside Claire and too worried about Bertie’s safety. That distraction was exactly why he had fallen for the trap.

He had been too focused on staying beside Claire and too worried about Bertie’s safety. That distraction was exactly why he had fallen for the trap.

That mistake would never happen again.

Wherever Claire stayed, he would stay too.

As long as she did not chase him away, he would never leave her side. No, even if she did try to send him away, he would not leave.

“The news about Bertie was fake, too? They used it to lure me outside the city?”

Zane shook his head.

“No. That part was real. Finlay mixed truth with lies on purpose. He was afraid you wouldn’t fall for it otherwise.”

Marcus’s expression immediately tightened.

“Then Bertie…”

Did that mean Bertie really had been trapped outside the city?

“Relax,” Zane said. “He should be safe by now.”

Just as Zane finished speaking, a fierce gust of wind suddenly swept through the area, sending snow swirling through the air and scattering it over both men.

Zane immediately stopped talking. As if he already knew who it was, he lifted his head and looked toward the sky.

A massive gyrfalcon was descending from above. Clutched tightly in its talons was a beast. It was Bertie, who had been missing for a long time.

The giant bird landed in front of Zane with a heavy thud. Snow shook loose from its feathers as its huge body rapidly shrank, shifting back into human form.

The moment Zane saw Rufus, a slight annoyance appeared on his face.

“Did you really have to make this much noise? Were you trying to make sure everyone saw you rescuing Bertie?”

Before Rufus left, Zane had clearly told him to carry out the rescue quietly. But did this reckless idiot even understand what “quietly” meant?

He had flown straight across the skies above Grimstone in full beast form. And the worst part was how eye-catching his beast form was. It was practically impossible for anyone to miss him.
