Rufus snorted and brushed the snow off his fur tunic like he couldn’t care less.
“So what if someone saw me?” he said with a snort. “You think I’d be scared of them?”
Even though he was only Level 2 and hadn’t broken through to Level 3 yet, Rufus had never feared the Level 3 beastfolk in the city.
At most, they would fight.
And if it really came down to that, it would take them a long time to kill him.
He jerked his chin toward Bertie lying nearby.
“I brought him back for you. But who’s this guy anyway? When did you know him? And how come I’ve never heard about it?”
If Zane hadn’t insisted that beastfolk were important, Rufus would never have bothered flying all the way out to that freezing, middle-of-nowhere valley to look for him.
He was the strongest warrior of the eagle clan. Not Zane’s personal errand runner.
The moment Bertie appeared, Marcus caught a familiar scent in the air. His expression changed immediately. He hurried over and knelt beside him, both hands searching carefully.
Bertie was unconscious in the snow. His fur tunic had been ripped apart in several places, and dried blood stuck to the fabric.
“Blood…” Marcus’s voice tightened. “Bertie, can you hear me? Where have you been all this time? I looked everywhere for you. I thought maybe you…”
Panic crept into his voice, but Bertie still didn’t respond.
Rufus pursed his lips.
“You can stop calling him. When I pulled him out of there, I had to fly high to get through the blockade. He got scared and fainted halfway.”
Marcus finally let out a breath of relief. So, he had only passed out. Thank goodness.
Still, Bertie’s injuries looked terrible. Cuts and bruises covered his body, and the heavy smell of blood hung in the cold air. It was obvious he had been tortured badly.
Zane frowned slightly.

“Yeah. A whole bunch of them. At first, I thought he was the only one trapped in that valley. But after I dug him out from under those rocks and tried to leave, beastfolk started popping up from everywhere. I didn’t waste time. I beat them so badly they ran for their lives, then I flew straight back.”
He casually explained how he rescued Bertie.
Zane listened quietly while thinking things through. Finlay really had planned this well. First, he lured Marcus out of the city. Then he prepared people to ambush him outside.
If Rufus and Zane hadn’t stepped in tonight, Marcus probably would’ve already been captured.
“And you know what else?” Rufus continued proudly. “Those guys even brought beast nets with them. Good thing I was fast enough. If they’d caught me in one of those, things would’ve gotten annoying.”
He kept talking nonstop, clearly pleased with himself. Meanwhile, Marcus was still crouched in the snow, holding Bertie carefully in his arms.
Zane lowered his gaze toward him. Those nets had obviously been prepared for Marcus. He was a Level 3 beastfolk with terrifying strength. Under normal circumstances, those people would never have been able to overpower him. But Marcus’s blindness was a deadly weakness. If they trapped him in a net before he could react, restricting his movements would become much easier.
Marcus adjusted Bertie onto his shoulder. Then, after giving Zane a quiet nod, he leaped over the wall and disappeared into the yard.
Rufus stared at the young man, confusion written all over his face.
“Who’s that pretty boy?”
For some reason, the second Rufus saw that youthful, harmless-looking face, irritation rose inside him instantly.
Zane’s mouth twitched. Honestly, Marcus really did look a little too pretty.
Even so, Zane still explained calmly,
“That’s Grimstone’s young lord. Marcus Holland.”
Rufus froze at once. “What?”
His whole body instantly tensed like a drawn bowstring. Even the hairs on the back of his neck. stood up as he stared in the direction Marcus had disappeared.

“You mean that beastfolk? The one who just bonded with a female that looks like Claire?”
Zane let out a tired sigh.
“She doesn’t just look like Claire,” he said helplessly. “The female bonded to him is Claire.”
Rufus went completely still.
He blinked hard, unable to believe what he had just heard.
“You’re serious? Before, you only suspected it. Back then you weren’t even sure. So how can you suddenly be certain now? That female really is our mate?”
Zane looked at him without a word, his expression practically speaking, Why would I joke about something like this?
Rufus felt like something inside him cracked apart.
He slumped down onto a stone block by the roadside, looking like a giant vulture perched on a dead branch. His head hung low in defeat. The black fur cloak draped over his shoulders spread across the snowy ground, but he didn’t even notice.
For a long moment, he couldn’t accept it. He and Claire had only been together for a short time. They had barely shared a few nights together before they were separated.
Back then, they had still been deeply in love..
Every day, Rufus had wanted to stay wrapped around her. He wanted to hold her all the time, never letting go. His feelings had been strongest then. And that was precisely when Jeffrey appeared.
All this time, Rufus had believed Claire missed him just as much as he missed her. He imagined her hiding somewhere alone, crying quietly and waiting for him to rescue her.
But now he suddenly learned that she had already found another beast mate. Not only that, she had even given birth to Marcus’s younglings. For the first time, Rufus felt abandoned.
Has Claire already grown tired of me so quickly?
His face had always been cold and proud, but now it looked even more distant and dangerous. A chilling pressure surrounded him. The beastfolk passing nearby quickly moved out of the way, afraid they might get caught in the storm of his anger.
