Zane patted Rufus on the shoulder and tried to calm him down.

“You should get used to it sooner or later. Claire’s an amazing female. There’s no way just the two of us would ever be enough for her. Jeffrey already proved that. I checked Marcus out myself. He’s decent.”
“Decent? That blind guy?”
Rufus was unconvinced. Sure, the three beast marks on Marcus’s face stood out, but he still looked far too young. He looked like a kid who had barely grown up. Rufus honestly wondered if Marcus was even an adult yet.
Zane shook his head. This was something Rufus had to figure out on his own. No matter how much Zane explained, Rufus would just ignore him anyway.
In the Beast World, most females had several mates. Still, powerful male beastfolk got special treatment occasionally. Some could stay one-on-one with their mate. Others, especially rulers like city lords, could have multiple mates.
Rufus had always thought highly of himself. It was normal that he couldn’t accept Claire bonding with another mate so quickly.
Zane walked away, leaving Rufus sitting alone by the side of the street.
Right now, Rufus needed time to cool off.
The snowstorm grew heavier. Rufus stayed crouched there without moving. Snow piled onto his short black hair and heavy cloak. Before long, he looked almost like a snowman.
Suddenly, a chunk of frozen meat landed in front of him. It rolled across the ground and stopped beside his boots.
The boots were made from beast hide. Waterproof and warm. Claire had taught him how to make them.
Even the cloak on his shoulders had been tied by Claire herself. The fur was thick and long, a rare pure black without a single stray color. It matched Rufus perfectly.
Rufus suddenly snapped out of his thoughts. He looked up at the beastfolk walking away.
The frozen meat had come from him.
“Hey! I’m not a beggar!” Rufus shouted. “Take your food back!”

Dammit!
That guy had actually mistaken him for some poor beastfolk begging on the street.
The beastfolk jumped in fright at Rufus’s fierce tone and quickly ran off.

“Good deed for nothing,” he muttered while leaving. “Tried to give you food and you still yelled at me.”
After that little moment, Rufus finally stopped feeling so miserable. He stretched his stiff body and started walking away.
At the street corner, Zane sat inside a roasted meat shop. When he saw Rufus finally move, he relaxed and finished the last of his warm water.
Then he stopped Rufus.
“You can’t see Claire now. Just hold back a few more days.”
Rufus frowned.
“Why?”
“It’s hard to explain. Just trust me, alright? I want to see her too. But if we go now, she’ll be in even more danger. You don’t want what happened with Jeffrey to happen again, do you?”
Rufus froze. In the end, he quietly followed Zane back to the stone house they were renting together.
The wind carried Zane’s voice through the snow.
“I remember the eagle clan has something called explosives. Explain that to me properly.”
“Hehe, that’s one of the treasures owned by my clan.”
Marcus settled Bertie into another room. He grabbed some of the herbs they kept around the house, cleaned and wrapped his wounds, then headed back to Claire’s room.
The room was warm as spring. Claire had just woken up and was still lying under the fur blankets in a daze.
After realizing she was still in the Beast World, she let out a quiet laugh at herself.
In her dream, she had gone back to modern times again. She had been running back and forth between the hospital and home, while people kept whispering behind her back about how she

Claire turned to look at the little bed beside her. Piles of cubs were still fast asleep there, snoring softly. They looked unbelievably cute.
“How did I forget?” she muttered with a smile. “I’m already the mother of 89 babies.”
And that included 25 eggs.
Let’s see who dares call her infertile now.
Claire thought about it and couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“Claire, you’re awake! Want something to eat?”
Marcus pushed open the door, quickly shut it behind him, then looked at her with a bright grin.
Claire touched her flat stomach. She couldn’t tell whether she felt empty because she had just given birth or because she was truly hungry. Either way, new mothers were supposed to eat more, so she nodded right away.
“Yes!”
Marcus blinked his smiling eyes and suddenly pulled out a bamboo flask from behind his back like a magician.
“Ta-da! Claire, food’s here. Eat it while it’s hot!”
Claire assumed Marcus had made it while she was asleep. She took it without thinking much
about it.
The moment she opened the lid and saw the rich stew inside, her eyes lit up.
“Wow! You can make this too? This dish is complicated. Your cooking has gotten way better!”
Claire lifted the flask and took a sip. The broth was rich and sweet, and the smell alone made her appetite grow instantly.
Marcus smiled softly and said nothing. He happily accepted the credit for the meal. After all, he couldn’t let Claire find out it had actually been made by Zane.
Claire never suspected a thing. She finished the soup in one go and then happily tore into the chunks of beast meat inside. Soon her stomach felt warm and full, and she let out a long, satisfied sigh.
