Still, if she helped, Marcus’s chances of winning would go up at least a little.

Claire might only be a Level 2 female, and her fighting power was limited, but people kept forgetting one thing. She still had modern weapons stored in her storage space.
The anti-tank launcher only had one shell left, and she had already used it on Jeffrey.
But she still had a Gatling gun and a sniper rifle. The ammo was limited, yet it should still be useful against Finlay.
After hearing Claire’s words, the dark look on Marcus’s face faded. A smile slowly returned to his lips.
“Thanks, Claire! But you only need to take care of yourself and the cubs. Leave Finlay to me!”
He was not fighting alone. Zane and Rufus were both still in the city. Two days earlier, Marcus had already met with Zane and told him every suspicion he had about Finlay.
Zane probably already had a plan in mind.
Marcus decided he needed to find another chance to meet with Zane in the next few days. They needed to fully discuss their strategy. Only then would he feel at ease.
By now, Bertie had mostly recovered. He could finally help Claire with some simple chores, so Marcus temporarily left him at the house.
Bertie agreed without hesitation. Still, the way he secretly looked at Claire sometimes made her uncomfortable.
Claire nodded in agreement. Marcus was confident, and since he said he did not need her help, she decided to focus on taking care of the cubs for now. If things truly got bad, she could still step in herself.
With double protection like this, she refused to believe Finlay could stay standing forever.
From that day on, Bertie took over the cooking and cleaning.
Occasionally he also helped watch the babies, but Claire worried about exhausting someone who had only recently recovered, so she never left him alone with them for too long.
Of course, part of her stayed cautious.
Her complete trust was reserved only for the people closest to her.

Bertie was still a little too distant. Besides, the strange looks he gave her from time to time always felt a little off. Claire never brought it up, though. She only wondered quietly if Bertie might be hiding some kind of secret.
Still, none of that really mattered. Bertie worked hard whenever he cared for the babies. Claire personally handled most of their care anyway.
Meanwhile, Marcus spent his days moving around the city. He contacted several old followers from the time when his father had been the city lord. Finlay had already pushed aside most of those beastfolk, stripping them of their real power.
But even weakened people could still be useful.
Everything moved forward at full speed.
At last, under the eager eyes of every beastfolk in Grimstone, the day of the Sky Rites finally arrived.
And it also happened to be the last day of winter.
The next morning, the sun still hadn’t risen above the horizon. Only a faint glow showed in the distance. Just as expected, the snowstorm had finally stopped. The snow on the ground hadn’t melted yet. It had been shoveled into small piles along the roads like tiny white hills.
It was the last day of winter, and the people of Grimstone were already busy.
Some repaired houses damaged by the storms. Others lit bonfires and cooked food. Even more beastfolk headed toward the altar in the center of town.
Inside the warm stone house, Claire woke to the noisy voices outside. Marcus had one arm wrapped tightly around her waist, holding her close in his sleep.
His fur-lined tunic was a mess, and his curly hair looked completely tangled. There was even a little white milk stain on the tip of his nose. His eyes stayed shut as he slept deeply.
Claire could tell right away that Marcus hadn’t slept well again last night. The babies had probably been fussy again.
They still woke up hungry in the middle of the night, needing milk. Marcus had taken over all the nighttime feeding himself and hadn’t let Claire worry about a thing.
Claire gently fixed his messy hair and wiped the milk stain from his nose.
Then her eyes drifted lower. Under his open tunic, his pale skin and firm muscles showed clearly. He wasn’t overly muscular, but he still looked very nice.
His body didn’t have an ounce of extra fat on it. Everywhere she touched felt firm and toned.

Faint lines ran down from his lower stomach, disappearing beneath his clothes in a way that made her face heat up.
Claire didn’t dare stare for too long. She only casually touched him for another ten minutes. before finally pulling her hand back in satisfaction.
She looked out the window. The sky was still dim, so she knew it was early. At first, she wanted to go back to sleep, but once she closed her eyes, she realized she wasn’t tired anymore.
After all, she had slept wonderfully last night.
And it was all thanks to Marcus.
Thinking of that, Claire couldn’t stay in bed any longer. She quietly slipped out from under the fur blankets and walked over to check on the babies.
There were simply too many of them. Some were sprawled everywhere on the little bed, while others were sleeping face-down. Claire gently rolled a few of them over and counted carefully. Every single one was there.
When she noticed a few tiny bellies weren’t moving, her heart skipped a beat. She quickly held her hand near their noses. Only after feeling the faint little breaths against her fingers did she finally relax.
Still alive.
Claire splashed cold water on her face and headed into the kitchen. She tossed yesterday’s frozen beef into warm water to thaw, then cut it into small pieces. Soon, strips of bacon were sizzling in the pan while potatoes and eggs cooked over the fire. She stirred everything together into a hot breakfast hash, added a little salt and pepper, then topped it with shredded cheddar cheese right before serving. The rich smell of bacon and fried potatoes quickly filled the whole house, making the morning air feel instantly warmer.
