Claire had just finished cooking. She scooped the meat stew into a stone bowl and let it cool when a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind.

A fresh floral scent surrounded her at once.

“Marcus! You’re awake!”

Marcus still looked half asleep. He held Claire by the waist and rested his head on her shoulder. His eyes stayed closed, and his lashes trembled lightly.

He was tall and lean, about a head taller than Claire, so the position fit perfectly.

He wasn’t too heavy, so Claire didn’t feel uncomfortable.

If it had been Zane or the even taller Rufus, they probably would’ve had to bend all the way down-or nearly snap their necks-to pull off something this intimate.

The thought made Claire burst out laughing. Her shaking made the sleepy Marcus wake up a little.

“Claire, I’m so tired. What are you laughing at?”

“I’m laughing at you. Your babies must’ve worn you out last night!”

Marcus was upset.

“Claire, come sleep with me a little longer.” He dragged out the last words like he was acting spoiled.

As he spoke, he tried to pull Claire back toward the bedroom.

But Claire was already fully awake. Once she woke up, she could never fall back asleep again. If she stayed in bed too long, she would just feel groggy and miserable.

Besides, if Marcus dragged her away right now, he might not actually be planning to sleep. He might just be hungry.

Thinking about the fact that Bertie was still in the house, Claire immediately refused.

“Nope! If you’re tired, go sleep by yourself for a while. I’ll call you when the stew cools down enough to eat. But don’t sleep too long today. Don’t forget we still have to attend the Sky Rites.”

At the mention of the Sky Rites, Marcus’s body slowly tensed. Remembering the fight waiting for him today, he gave up on the idea of sleeping more.

He yawned and said, “Claire, the Sky Rites are too dangerous. I should go alone. You and the cubs stay home. With Bertie here, I’ll feel better about it. Finlay will probably be too busy today to cause trouble.”

Claire actually wanted to see what Grimstone’s Sky Rites looked like. After being stuck indoors all winter, she badly wanted to get outside for a while.

But she also knew Finlay would never let things go peacefully at the ceremony. Not wanting to become a burden to Marcus, she finally compromised.

“Fine. But you have to promise me you’ll be careful. You must come back safe. The cubs and I will be waiting for you at home. Once you’re back, we’ll get ready to leave for the eagle clan and find Rufus and Zane.”

After all, Grimstone was still Finlay’s territory. The longer they stayed, the more dangerous it became.

Marcus turned his head and placed a light kiss against the side of Claire’s neck before smiling and agreeing.

The two of them had planned everything carefully. Before the plan could even begin, a knock sounded at the door.

Marcus walked outside, full of confusion. When he came back a moment later, his face had already darkened.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“What happened?”

“Finlay sent someone over. He said everyone attending the Sky Rites must bring their families with them.”

Claire’s heart thudded.

“So he really isn’t planning to let me go.”

Claire had wanted to keep a low profile and avoid trouble. If she stayed home, Finlay would probably be too busy with such an important event to remember someone as unimportant as

her.

But she had badly underestimated how much attention Finlay paid to her.

This was awful!

Marcus was furious too. He and Zane had already planned every step carefully, but now Claire

“Shh. Stop overthinking this!” Claire smiled. “Didn’t you see all those strange weapons in my storage space? You’ve always wanted to know how powerful they are, right?”

Ammunition was limited; every bullet mattered. Claire had never shown Marcus what the weapons could really do.

No matter how much Marcus trusted her, he still couldn’t imagine the true power of those

weapons.

His understanding of the world simply limited his imagination.

If he had ever seen them in action, he would never doubt her ability to survive.

Claire sighed softly. “I truly wish my whole body could enter the storage space too.”

Up until now, she could only manage the storage space with her mind. Her body itself could never go inside and always had to remain outside.

Occasionally that was useful. Even while she worked inside the space, her body outside only appeared quiet and still, so the beastfolk around her never noticed anything strange.

But in a dangerous situation, leaving her body outside became a huge weakness.

“Pome, emergency request. Please upgrade the storage space so my body can enter too!”

She urgently called out to Pome.

“Master, your request has been sent in,” Pome replied. “But whether the upgrade gets approved will depend on the rewards you earn from your next litter.”
