Claire’s face turned even redder as she mumbled, “How was I supposed to know there’d be this many people?”

She thought the Sky Rite was such an important and sacred event that it would be held somewhere hidden from ordinary citizens. Instead, the altar stood right in the center of the busiest part of the city.

The place was enormous too. It appeared large enough to accommodate all the beastfolk in Grimstone.

With so many eyes on them, there was no way Claire dared to get close to Marcus or act affectionate.

She quietly stepped farther away from him, though her hands suddenly felt restless.

The little green snake wrapped around her wrist yawned and slowly woke from his nap. His tiny eyes lazily opened.

He wanted to see where they were, but Claire’s thick fur cloak blocked his view. Davy couldn’t see anything outside. What he could see, however, was Claire’s smooth, warm skin. He happily rubbed his little head against her.

The cool touch instantly calmed Claire’s burning embarrassment from Marcus’s teasing. Her mood relaxed at once.

Still, standing high above the crowd while countless beastfolk stared at her made her feel nervous and uncomfortable.

A long wooden table nearby held a few simple fruits and some boiled meat. The plain food looked completely unappetizing.

Claire and Marcus had already been there for quite a while. Beastfolk attendants had guided them to their seats, and ever since then, they had simply been standing around waiting.

“We should’ve come later,” Claire muttered. “Marcus, I’m going to check on the babies in my storage space.”

After she said that, she leaned slightly against Marcus and let her consciousness slip into the

storage space.

Inside, all 51 cubs were rolling around and playing on the grass. Claire had built a wooden fence around them so they wouldn’t wander too far away.

Since only her consciousness had entered the space, the cubs didn’t notice her arrival and kept

Only one mischievous little cub was busy climbing the wooden fence, grunting and struggling as he tried to escape.

Claire watched him struggle for a long time without making it over the top and smiled in relief.

After checking the area once more and finding nothing unusual, her consciousness returned to her body.

When Marcus saw her open her eyes, he asked, “How are the cubs? Did they miss their daddy? I already miss them, and it’s only been a short while.”

“They’re all doing great,” Claire teased. “Honestly, I think they already forgot about you. Don’t worry about them.”

Claire joked with him for a while, her face bright with laughter.

The handsome young man beside her smiled warmly and played along.

Standing together, they looked like the perfect young couple.

The beastfolk nearby noticed the scene and couldn’t help commenting on it.

“Mr. Holland and his mate are seriously crazy about each other.”

“No kidding! If I had a beautiful woman like that as my mate, I’d wake up smiling every day.”

“Haha, keep dreaming. Look at yourself. Only someone like Mr. Holland could deserve a woman as amazing as her.”

The three of them weren’t keeping their voices down at all. It had only been some casual joking to pass the time, but the moment they finished talking, they suddenly felt two hostile stares stabbing into their backs.

At some point, two tall figures had appeared beside them, looking down at the chatting beastfolk with obvious displeasure.

“Uh, you two look unfamiliar. Did we say something offensive?”

One of the cat beastfolk quickly asked. He could tell these newcomers were not the kind to mess with.

Rufus wore an icy expression. He suddenly bent down, bringing his face close to the three much shorter beastfolk. His dark eyes swept over them one by one.

“Say that again,” he growled. “Repeat every word you just said.”

The killing intent on his face was so heavy that it looked like he might kill them if they answered wrong.

A simple-minded boar beastfolk scratched his head and awkwardly repeated, “Hmm, you two look unfamiliar. Did we say something offe-”

Bang!

Before he could finish, Rufus kicked him straight into the air.

Rufus kept his head lowered, his cold face hidden beneath a shadow. One leg was still stretched out from the kick, his black fur cloak swaying slightly behind him.

Slowly, word by word, he said, “I. Hate. Stupid. People.”

Then he lowered his leg and glared darkly at the remaining beastfolk.

The other two beastfolk instantly fell silent.

They were too scared to make a noise.

They had no idea what “hate stupid people” was supposed to mean, but thankfully, they were smart enough to realize their conversation had angered this ice-faced man. The problem was… they had no clue which sentence had set him off. Neither of them dared repeat a single word.

Inside, both of them cursed the boar beastfolk for being an idiot. At the same time, they immediately stood up straight, lowered their heads, and pressed their hands neatly against their sides.

“Sorry!”

Even though Rufus only had two beast marks, the murderous aura around him was the fiercest of all. The apology clearly wasn’t enough for him. His brows furrowed even tighter.

The atmosphere became painfully tense.

“Enough,” Zane’s voice came after a long silence. “We still have business to handle. Don’t attract

attention.”
