The Ultimate Litter: A Beast World System Tale novel Chapter 177

Chapter 177 The Smell of Blood

Marcus snapped his fingers and signaled to the beastfolk who were looking over.

Very quickly, the two beastfolk disappeared from the ceremonial square. Wiren they reappeared outside the city, their bodies were already covered in bruises

At that moment, all the beastfolk in the ceremonial square were staring at the passageway beside the altar. Many live animals were being carried in, their limbs tightly bound with vines and their mouths secured shut so they could not make a single sound.

Claire noticed the animals as well, mainly because there were simply too many of thefn to ignore.

Hundreds of prey animals of various sizes had been piled into a small mountain on the ground, and beastfolk continued bringing more and adding them to the heap.

Claire tugged on Marcus and asked, “What are all those animals for? There are so many of them! Today is the last day of winter. Starting tomorrow, the weather will get warmer. There’s no way all that meat can be eaten anytime soon, right?”

Marcus knew exactly what the next part of the ceremony involved. Worried that Claire might be frightened, he replied, “They’re not for eating. They’re for a blood sacrifice.”

Davy was still completely absorbed in his studies and oblivious to everything else, so Pome took over his role and dutifully translated for Claire.

Claire’s brows furrowed slightly.

“A blood sacrifice? That doesn’t sound good at all. Marcus, nothing’s going to go wrong later, is it?”

An uneasy feeling rose in her heart, though she could not pinpoint what seemed wrong, so she could only warn Marcus.

Marcus’s gaze deepened slightly as he lowered his head and replied, “It’s fine. I’m here.”

Claire felt somewhat reassured.

Seeing that no more animals were being brought up, she realized the Sky Rites was about to move on to its

next stage.

The deer beastfolk sang out loudly, “Begin the blood sacrifice! May the Beast God bless our homeland Grimstone and let it endure forever, day and night!”

As soon as his words fell, a beastfolk grabbed one of the prey animals. His hand shifted into a beast claw and its sharp talons sliced across the animal’s throat.

Flesh split open, and bright red blood immediately gushed out.

The steaming blood flowed into the channels surrounding the altar, staining the previously clean and dry ground crimson.

The prey animal writhed in pain and struggled wildly, but its limbs were bound tightly and its mouth

toild make no sound. No matter how hard it fought, if could not escape the beastfolk’s grip.

In the end, after all its bleed had drained away, it went limp.

Thunderous roars erupted from the crowd around them.

The scene seemed to ignite the beastfolk’s primal instincts, and one after another, they became visibly

excited.

Even Marcus grew somewhat restless after catching the faint scent of blood in the air.

“Marcus!”

Claire lightly scratched his palm, suppressing the beastly instincts that the smell of blood had stirred within him.

She knew that what set beastfolk apart from humans was that their animal nature had never disappeared. It remained buried deep inside them and could easily be awakened in certain situations.

Generally speaking, those instincts made beastfolk more irritable and aggressive, influencing their behavior to a certain extent.

However, if a beastfolk possessed strong self-control and sufficient strength, the effects could be almost completely ignored.

If Zane had been facing this situation, he probably would not have changed expression at all.

As for Rufus, he would not have been affected as strongly as Marcus either.

The main reason was that Marcus was still relatively young. He lacked enough real combat experience and had not yet mastered precise control over himself, which was why he appeared so restless.

Fortunately, with Claire’s reassurance, Marcus quickly suppressed the beastly urges within him.

The beastfolk around the altar, however, had reddened eyes and flushed faces as they watched the blood sacrifice with fascination.

As soon as the first prey animal’s blood had completely drained away, the second and third animals were dragged to the edge of the channels, their throats slit as their blood flowed into the trenches.

More and more beastfolk arrived and dragged the animals one by one to the channels, beginning the bloodletting.

There were so many animals that the channels surrounding the altar became completely crowded.

Streams of blood poured from one prey animal after another into the trenches, gathering into a crimson moat that surrounded the altar. The blood-filled river visibly and steadily rose higher before everyone’s

eyes.

The dying animals struggled desperately and released their final muffled cries.

The atmosphere around the entire altar became solemn and oppressive.

Chapter The Grnell of Bleed

Looking at the bloody scene below, with vast stretches of red filling her vision, Claire felt a tightness in her thest.

So this was a blood sacrifice.

Living animals were offered to the heavens in exchange for blessings and prosperity in the coming year

Back in the modern world, Claire had not even dared kill a chicken. It was only after coming to the Beast World that she had gradually adapted to a life of hunting and eating fresh kills, but even then, she could only watch. Asking her to do it herself was still impossible.

As more and more blood flowed out, Claire suddenly caught a strong metallic scent in the air.

She was seated on the second level of the altar, at least dozens of feet above the ground, yet the strell of blood had reached even that height. It was easy to imagine how oferwhelming the odor must have been below.

A wave of nausea hit her, and her stomach churned uncontrollably.

The contents threatened to surge up her throat at any moment.

The feeling was awful.

She quickly covered her mouth with her hand and tried desperately to suppress the urge to vomit, but it was useless. Seeing that she was about to lose control, Claire rose from behind the wooden table and hurried down the altar steps as fast as she could.
