Chapter 187 The One She Returned For

Finlay swung around toward the clouds where the gyrfalcon had disappeared, clawing at empty air wi impotent fury.

“Go and drag them back! Every last one of them!”

Several avian beastfolk among the city guards launched into the sky at once. Great wings beat against air as they climbed after the fleeing gyrfalcon, but the chase was hopeless from the start. Rufus was alr far beyond their reach. They couldn’t even catch sight of his tail feathers.

Watching Marcus disappear safely into the clouds, Claire finally released a breath she hadn’t realized sh been holding. One burden lifted.

She turned to face Finlay. Around her, the surrounding beastfolk tightened their formation, closing the circle little by little under his command.

Without hesitation, Claire hoisted her bicycle overhead and swung it in a wide arc.

The bizarre contraption had already earned a fearsome reputation. The beastfolk remained wary, reluctant to approach directly. Whenever the spinning wheels swept past, they jumped back, then darte in to strike whenever an opening appeared.

For several moments, neither side gained ground.

Then a massive brown bear burst through the crowd with a thunderous roar. Something about his movement seemed off. His right foreleg dragged slightly, weakened by injury, leaving a subtle limp in hi charge.

Even so, he moved frighteningly fast.

One powerful swipe hooked the bicycle’s front wheel. The force tore it from Claire’s hands!

It sailed through the air and crashed into the altar’s base. Both wheels now bent at ruinous angles, the handlebars snapped clean in two. It would never ride again.

A shame, she thought.

The system had finally granted her a means of travel. The motorcycle had run dry, and now the bicycle la in pieces. She would be walking from now on.

She twisted aside just in time as a claw the size of a shovel sliced through the air where shed ben standing.

In the narrow gap of that evasion, she got a better look at him. The brown bear was Finlay himself

He had taken a bullet, yet he fought as though nothing had happened. The beastfolk of this world, wezen built far too sturdy for her liking.

The bear’s hind legs rose, and he stood nearly as call as the altar platform self

Her own frame would barely reach his chest.

Chapter 187 The One She Returned For

Finlay opened his jaws, revealing rows of sharp yellow teeth, and roared.

“A puny female who dares to make trouble in my city… I could crush you like an insect!”

Claire retreated several steps, widening the distance between them. Not a trace of fear entered her voi

“Funny. For a respected city lord, you seem awfully eager to look down on females. Is that how you see them? Like insects? Things to collect and dispose of whenever it suits you? Is that why you’ve been so e to capture women and send them to Valorhenge?

“Or are you just Valorhenge’s little lapdog?”

The moment the words left her mouth, the canine beastfolk in the crowd shot her looks of pure disgus

She offered them a mocking smile and raised a careless finger.

“My apologies,” she said lightly. “I seem to have insulted dogs again.”

The canine beastfolk felt sullied just being mentioned in the same breath.

For the first time in their lives, they felt shame about their own kind.

Inside Claire’s mind, Davy’s deep voice sounded.

“Do you want me to deal with him?”

His strength had fully returned. As a drake, his power surpassed that of a Level 3 beastfolk. Defeating Finlay would require little effort.

“No.”

The answer escaped before she could think twice.

She wanted to see for herself what a Level 3 peak beastfolk could do. She wanted to know where she too

at Level 2.

If I always hide behind someone else’s strength, how could I ever grow on my own?

She refused Davy’s offer without a second thought.

The green snake coiled around her wrist closed his eyes again. If the female said that, she must have full confidence in her own abilities. No need for him to interfere.

He went back to sleep.

Claire nearly choked. He really was taking her at face value.

Inside, her nerves were stretched right as wire. But some thresholds had to be crossed etenually

Until now, she’d only fought Fiona. Her encounter with Jeffrey barely counted

This was differem. Finlay was a genuine Level 3 powerhouse. The wolf between him and Fleetwayas de

as an ocean. This was not some petty squabble.

How long can I hold my own?

She wanted to find out.

The brown bear exhaled a heavy breath, lowered his head, and charged straight at her.

“Die!”

The plaza shook beneath his weight. Claire staggered, nearly losing her feet, and watched the bear’s enormous body hurtle toward her with terrifying speed, his eyes fixed on hers.

High above the clouds, the gyrfalcon clutched the wooden post in his talons, wings beating steadily as searched for a place to set Marcus down.

The red sun blazed overhead, its light washing across every corner of the Beast World.

The wind up here cut cold and sharp. Marcus stirred from his daze and sneezed twice in quick successi the moment his eyes opened.

“Where am I?” he murmured. “Am I dead? Is this the Beast God’s heavenly realm?”

A large shadow shifted above him. The gyrfalcon lowered his head. His hooked beak parted slightly, revealing a surprisingly ordinary pink tongue.

“You wish,” Rufus said. “You’re not dead yet, pretty boy.”

“I’m alive?”

Marcus shook his head to clear it and recognized the bird.

“…Rufus?”

He had never seen Rufus in his beast form before, but the scent of this gyrfalcon matched the man he knew without question.

He would not mistake it.

Then something struck him, and his voice tightened with worry.

“Were you not supposed to escort Claire out of the city? Why are you still here? Did she send you to say, me?”
