Chapter 209 The Shadow in the Woods
Finise
A rich, sweet scent drifted through the air. Rufus couldn’t bring himself to pull away. He kept his lips against Claire for a long time without lifting his head.
Then suddenly, he froze. He jerked upright and snapped his head toward the trees. His eyes locked onto the shadows ahead. The forest looked empty, nothing but darkness between the trunks, but his instincts screamed that something had been there.
Rufus took two long strides forward and shifted into his gyrfalcon form mid-run. In the blink of an eye reached the trees.
Nobody was there.
Not even a small animal.
But he caught a cold, sharp smell mixed with damp dirt lingering nearby.
Rufus dug through the soil with his claws inch by inch yet found nothing suspicious.
“Stop hiding. Get out here. I know you’re there!”
Only silence answered him.
Rufus refused to give up. He beat his wings hard, sending leaves and branches flying through the woods.
Among the rustling sounds, something unusual slipped through.
Rufus focused carefully. Tiny branches were striking something hard-scales. The sound was faint, but his hearing was sharp enough to catch it.
He spun around instantly. A black shadow burst from the bushes and shot away at incredible speed.
“Get out here!”
Rufus growled lowly. He ripped the entire bush out by the roots with one claw. Underneath was a deep trail in the dirt, like a snake had slithered through moments ago.
He followed the marks deeper into the woods. The trail slowly faded, leading him farther and farther away. When he reached a creek, the tracks vanished completely.
Rufus searched the area unwillingly, growing more unsettled by the second. That smell felt strangely familiar, and for some reason, it filled him with panic.
While Rufus searched for the intruder, Claire slept peacefully on the grass. She had no idea a slick brown snake was silently slithering along her body. It moved without making the slightest sound.
Slowly, it reached her ankle.
Part of its tail wrapped around her pale leg, rubbing its scales against her smooth skin.
But the tail looked strange. Instead of being long and thin like a normal snake’s, it was shorter and thicker. The end looked as though it had once been chopped off and later healed badly. The scarred stump was ugly

The snake narrowed its eyes in satisfaction and slowly slithered higher up her leg.

A tiny green snake suddenly popped out from beneath Claire’s fur tunic. It raised the upper half of its body and bared its fangs at the brown snake.

“Female! Wake up! Wake up!”
Claire jolted awake from her dream.
Rufus’s handsome face filled her vision. He looked anxious and kept calling her name.
“Claire, why were you sleeping so deeply? I couldn’t wake you no matter how hard I tried!”
Claire brushed back her messy hair and smiled.
“Rufus, did I scare you? I’m okay. I was just sleeping too hard and didn’t hear you calling me.”
Her eyes were still hazy from sleep. Seeing the handsome man in front of her, knowing he was her mate, she instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down.
Then she pressed her lips against his.
His cool lips paused for only a moment before taking control. He kissed her deeply, stealing her breath bit by bit.
“Rufus… slow down…”
Claire finally managed to gasp out the words during a short pause, but Rufus ignored her completely like a wild animal. He continued kissing her intensely while pinning her beneath him.

cool air hit her suddenly, making her body tremble slightly.
“Rufus… it’s cold…”
Her mind was a mess after the kisses. She could only cling to him instinctively and whine softly.
The sweet sound tightened Rufus’s stomach, and his eyes darkened further.
A pair of giant wings burst from his back and wrapped around Claire. Thick feathers covered her completely, shielding her like a warm blanket.
