Zane thought for aoment, glanced at the younglings strapped to Marcus’s back, and said to Claire, “Claire, what do you want to do?”

If Claire softened and wanted to save those females, he would come up with a foolproof plan. It would ju cost them some time, and Rufus would probably use it as an excuse to linger again.

Claire hadn’t expected Zane to throw the question back to her. She didn’t want to think at all. She just wanted to reach the Eagle Clan settlement as quickly as possible and see her younglings.

While she was still hesitating, Marcus spoke up.

“Claire, we’d better stay out of it. Zerak isn’t weak, and he’s got so many beastfolk with him. Those fernal might not even be grateful. For all we know, they could be treated better in Valorhenge than they were in Grimstone!”

Claire nodded. He had a point. She wasn’t some kind of savior. There was no need to rescue every femal she came across!

If one of her beast mates got hurt because of it, she’d be the one paying the price!

Having made up her mind, Claire told them to take a longer route around the area so they wouldn’t run into Zerak and his group head-on.

Meanwhile, Zerak quickly climbed a tree, intending to get a better view of the route ahead from higher ground.

What came into view, however, was a giant panda as massive as a small hill, pushing aside trees in its path and lumbering away from them.

That black-and-white beast form was unforgettable. One glance was all it took for him to recognize it.

“Marcus? What’s he doing here? Didn’t Mr. Byrne say Marcus was supposed to be used for the blood sacrifice? Did something happen to the ritual?”

As soon as he finished speaking, he shifted into a leopard and shot forward.

The other male beastfolk were confused by his behavior, but they still hurriedly urged the females and followed Zerah in that direction.

The females were already physically weak, and with their hands tied, they couldn’t run very fast at all.

The younglings’ fur pouch was still strapped to his back. He wasn’t worried about himself if Zerak pounced on him, but he was afraid Zerak might hurt the younglings.

Zane, who was walking just ahead of him, noticed Zerak’s attack immediately and rushed toward Marcu

Up in the air, Rufus had already flown some distance away when Claire hurriedly called him back.

Inside Claire’s mind, Davy frantically warned her, “That beastfolk named Zerak has already spotted Marcus! I heard everything!”

He had just overheard Zerak’s thoughts. There wasn’t even time to be surprised before he rushed to warn the female.
