Chapter 262 Nightmare
“Did you ask Claire about that thing last night? Did she agree?”
Dinished
Zane’s fingers paused. He glanced sideways at Marcus and saw the hopeful look on his face, so he decided
to tease him.
“Claire said no.”
“What?” Marcus was crushed. He twisted his index fingers together and muttered gloomily, “How is that possible? That doesn’t sound like Claire!”
After spending so much time with Claire in Grimstone, he couldn’t imagine her refusing to try it.
Claire was very open-minded about that sort of thing.
Marcus looked as though someone had dumped a bucket of cold water over his head. He wilted, and even the roasted meat in his hand no longer tasted good.
Zane laughed to himself. The little guy was surprisingly fun to tease.
The bonfire in the center of the clan burned higher and higher, lighting up every beastfolk’s face.
Eva had already pulled Claire into the dancing.
Calling it dancing was generous. The beastfolk were simply improvising, each moving however they pleased. The scene was chaotic but lively.
Claire took Eva’s hand.
“Come on. I’ll teach you a circle dance.”
“Huh?” Eva looked confused.
Claire didn’t explain and simply demonstrated.
The steps were simple but graceful and joyful. Eva caught on quickly, and the two of them began dancing hand in hand. Soon, the other beastfolk started copying them.
Before long, nearly everyone had learned. They linked arms and danced around the bonfire together.
Claire sighed in satisfaction. A circle dance really was perfect for a large bonfire celebration.
While the lynx clan celebrated, an equally dramatic scene was unfolding in the eagle clan’s square.
Two female beastfolk stood facing each other. One had her hands on her hips, while the other had her arms crossed,
The one with her hands on her hips was slightly shorter and thinner, but she didn’t lose an ounce of confidence. Her voice was sharp and clear.
“Fiona, have you no shame? You’re even going after an underage male youngling!

The female with her arms crossed was Fiona. She looked contemptuously at the beastfolk who stood half a head shorter than her and replied lazily.
“What can I do? He’s the one who keeps clinging to me. And who do you think you are, Tyne? You think you get to control me?”
The shorter female standing across from Fiona was Tyne.
Tyne’s chest heaved with anger. Since she couldn’t win the argument, she could only say, “Just wait. When Claire comes back, I’m telling her everything you’ve been doing!”
Fiona didn’t take the threat seriously at all. She calmly stroked her cheek.
“Go ahead and tattle all you want. You think I’m scared of you?”
With that, she sauntered away.
Tyne nearly choked on her rage. Her beast mate quickly pulled her into his arms and comforted her.
“Don’t get worked up, Tyne. She won’t stay arrogant for much longer.”
Tyne murmured, “Claire, hurry back. If you don’t, Fiona is going to get your younglings killed!”
At midnight, the moon hung high in the sky.
Claire suddenly shot upright on the stone bed.
Her chest heaved, and large beads of sweat rolled down her forehead, soaking the strands of hair at her temples.
Zane woke immediately. He wrapped his arms around her and asked with concern, “Claire, what’s wrong?”
Terrifying images from her dream flashed through Claire’s mind, and her heart pounded like a drum.
“I had a nightmare!”

She turned and buried her face in Zane’s chest. Only after pressing close to him did she begin to calm down.
“In the dream, our younglings were being bullied and beaten by other beastfolk. They were bleeding, but no matter how much they cried for help, no one came. Nobody could save them! It broke my heart. Zane, it was terrifying!”
Zane held Claire tighter, slowly rubbing her back as he comforted her.
“Don’t be afraid. It was only a dream. Our younglings are safe in the eagle clan. Rufus’s mom is personally taking care of them. You know Rufus’s dad is the eagle clan chief. No one would dare mistreat them.
Whenever he visited the younglings, they were always happy. Rufus’s mother, Aurora Ashbourne was gentle and patient, and she cared for them devotedly.

Claire’s voice came out muffled against his chest.
“They say mothers can sense when something’s wrong with their children. What if something happened to them? Zane, I wish we could go back to the eagle clan right now.”
At that moment, her need to see the younglings was stronger than ever.
Zane nodded. “Alright. If you want to go back, we’ll go.”
They fell silent for a moment. Claire sighed and continued, “I know I shouldn’t panic over nothing, but I’m really worried about them. Zane, what if they don’t want me anymore?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. You’re their mom. How could they not want you?”
Zane continued soothing Claire in a gentle voice.
In the quiet night, only their soft voices could be heard.
Early the next morning, Claire got up impatiently. She went to find Marcus first and told him what she had decided the night before.
