Chapter 267 One Missing
“Zane, those are our beastlings! I know they are. I’d recognize them anywhere!”

The moment Claire saw her younglings, excitement overwhelmed her. One second, she was tugging on Zane’s arm. The next, she had taken several steps forward, but she was so nervous that she had no idea what to say.
She crouched down, holding a little rabbit woven from foxtail grass. She frad made it casually on the way there.
The wolf and fox younglings’ eyes lit up when they saw the adorable grass rabbit.
One red fox beastling had nine tails, but each one wagged in a different direction, creating a strangely chaotic beauty.
He looked up at the middle-aged female beastfolk and asked cautiously, “Can I go play with that little rabbit?”
The moment Claire heard him speak so clearly, tears rushed to her eyes. She quickly dug her nails into her palm and forced them back.
Her beastling could already talk.
His soft, childish voice melted her heart instantly.
The middle-aged female beastfolk nodded kindly. She/crouched down, stroked his little head, and pointed at Claire.
“But if you want to play with something that belongs to her, you need to ask permission first. Do you know who she is?”
The nine-tailed red fox looked at Claire’s face, then lowered his gaze to the little rabbit in her hand. He hesitated, too nervous to approach.
A black wolf came flying out from behind him.
Calling it flying was generous. His four short legs barely left the ground, and he wobbled from side to side before crashing straight into the nine-tailed red fox’s rear and knocking him forward.
The black wolf also fell to the ground. No matter how hard his tiny wings flapped, he couldn’t get airborne again, and he immediately burst into tears.
Claire rushed over in distress and gently picked him up.
“There, there. I’ll blow on it, and it’ll feel better.”
She gently blew on his sore little bottom as she soothed him.
The black wolf sniffled, tears still clinging to the corners of his eyes.
The nine-tailed red fox jumped aside and asked warily. “Are you… our mom? The mom who gave birth to

Claire nodded.
“That’s right! You’re Scarlet, aren’t you? Don’t you remember rne?”
Scarlet’s tiny body jolted in surprise.
“You really know my name!”
The younglings who had been hiding behind the middle-aged female beastfolk began stepping out one by one, curiously studying the beautiful stranger.
The black wolf stopped crying too and rubbed his little head against Claire’s chest.
“Mom, you really are our mom. I missed you so much. Waaah!”
Zane Eleven burst into heartbroken sobs.
The other younglings hurried over. Some softly comforted Zane Eleven, while others timidly called Claire “Mom.”
Claire crouched down and gathered all of them into her arms.
Scarlet sniffed Claire carefully. At last, all his doubts vanished, and he cried with certainty,
“You really are Mom! I remember now. I remember your scent! Mom!”
His words sent the remaining younglings who still had doubts racing toward her.
“Mom, Mom, I missed you so much!”
“Me too! Mom, hold me. Hold me first!”
“Mom, I finally have a mom too!”
Their voices were soft and childish as they called her “Mom” over and over, throwing themselves into her arms, nuzzling and licking her.

Claire felt as though her heart had been filled to the brim with her adorable, well-behaved younglings.
Tears finally slipped from the corners of her eyes, but this time, they were tears of joy.
Her younglings still remembered her scent. Their initial hesitation hadn’t been because they had forgotten her. They simply couldn’t believe that the mom they had longed for day and night had finally returned
The younglings were all about the same size, reaching only to Claire’s knees, but every one of them was incredibly strong. They nearly knocked her over.
Claire counted them carefully, again and again, and her brow gradually furrowed.
“Eleven… Why are there only eleven younglings? Where’s the last one?”

She looked toward Kieran standing nearby. He hesitated, as though there were something he found difficult to say.
Claire turned to the middle-aged female beastfolk.
“You must be Rufus’s mom. My name is Claire. I’m Rufus’s mate.”
Aurora nodded.
“I know. It’s nice to meet you.”
After greeting Aurora, Claire asked anxiously, “Where’s the other youngling?”
Her voice trembled, terrified that the answer would break her heart.
Aurora looked about 40 years old, with smooth, youthful skin and no wrinkles except for two faint lines around her mouth.
Aurora looked at Claire with a troubled expression. After a long silence, she sighed.
“Zane Six fell from a tree not long ago and was injured. He still hasn’t recovered.”
Claire was shocked and terrified. The trees here were so tall that even she would suffer internal injuries from a fall, much less a tiny youngling barely over six months old.
