Chapter 268 Something Wrong
Claire’s knees went weak, and she stumbled back two steps before Zane caught her in his arms.
Zane reassured her, “Don’t panic. I’m sure it isn’t as serious as you think!”
Kieran awkwardly cut in, “Uh, it actually is pretty serious. None of our healer’s treatments have worked, and the wound keeps getting worse.”
The composure Claire had just regained shattered again. She could no longer hold the black wolf in her arms and had to let him jump to the ground.
Kieran and Aurora both lowered their heads like children who had done something wrong, weighed down by guilt.
Claire hurriedly asked, “Where is Zane Six? Take me to him now.”
Her heart pounded violently. The nightmare that had haunted her flashed through her mind again, and she was terrified that something really bad had happened to Zane Six.
Aurora quickly led Claire away.
The younglings followed close behind, all talking at once as they tried to comfort Claire.
Zane glanced at the long line of beastfolk following them and quickly told Marcus to stop.
Marcus wanted to follow and see what had happened to Claire’s youngling, but Zane held him back.
“Marcus, stay here with the younger younglings. There’s plenty of space, so let them get used to the area.”
Marcus saw the sense in that and stopped insisting. He bent his four thick legs and lowered his massive body to the ground.
The brown panda beastling poked its head out from behind his ear and curiously surveyed its surroundings.
Zane turned to Matilda, but before he could speak, she said, “You and Claire go ahead. We’ll stay right here and won’t go anywhere!”
They were newcomers, after all, and had no connection to the eagle clan. Claire was the only reason they had been allowed inside.
They hadn’t had a chance to explain their situation to Kieran yet, so they had nowhere else to go.
Zane nodded. Matilda truly knew how to behave.
Zane turned and strode in the direction Claire had gone.
His expression remained calm, but deep down, he was terrified that something might happen to his youngling.
Aurora pulled Claire beneath one of the enormous banyan tree’s branches and pointed toward a tree

house above.
“Zane Six is up there!

With that, Aurora leaped into the air. Her body rose as lightly as a feather, and a pair of multicolored wings spread from her back. In the blink of an eye, she landed in front of the tree house.
Zane came up behind Claire, wrapped one arm around her slender waist, and pushed off the ground with both legs. He kicked off the tree trunk several times as he climbed and quickly reached the tree house.
The moment Zane released her, Claire rushed inside.
The tree house was square, about 16 feet on each side, with a window set into every wall.
A wooden bed stood against the wall opposite the door. A black wolf lay curled into a ball on top of it, his body trembling helplessly.
Claire rushed over, wanting to pick him up but afraid she might hurt him.
The black wolf was little more than skin and bone, but his large frame was still obvious. He was three or four times bigger than the wolf younglings she had just seen.
“Six, your mom is here.”
Aurora spoke softly.
Zane Six didn’t respond. His eyes remained tightly shutas his body began to convulse.
Claire placed a hand on him in distress. Beneath his fluffy fur, he was painfully thin, and his body radiated intense heat.
“What’s wrong with Six? His fever is so high!”
Aurora shook her head. “I don’t know. He hasn’t eaten anything unusual, and he’s been with the other younglings every day. Then this suddenly started two days ago. The healer examined him, but nothing worked.”
Claire quickly soaked a soft piece of beast hide in clean water and laid it across Zane Six’s forehead.
Then she gathered him into her arms, examining his body while soothing him softly. “Be good, Six. I’m your mom. I’m here now. You won’t feel sick much longer.”
Slowly, Zane Six’s body stopped stiffening and began to relax.
On the inside of one hind leg was a dense cluster of tiny red spots that looked horrifying.
When Claire touched them lightly, a clear yellow fluid seeped out.
She brought her fingers to her nose, and the smell of decay immediately filled her nostrils.
She lowered her hand, her expression grave.
Noticing the change in her face, Zane quickly said to Aurora, “Please arrange some empty tree houses for

Aurora nodded and flew back down.
Only after she left did Zane sit beside Claire, wrap both hands around her shoulders, and ask, “Claire, what’s wrong with Six?”
Claire looked at Zane with tears in her eyes, her voice trembling.
“Zane, Six has been poisoned.”
“Poisoned?”
Zane’s eyes narrowed. Had someone in the cagle clan poisoned his youngling?
Claire nodded and pointed at the cluster of red spots.
“This is where the poison touched his skin. He has a rash, foul-smelling discharge, and a high fever. Back in the fox clan, I heard the healer describe this. It’s Soulrot.”
