Fiona hurried over and put on a pitiful voice.

“Kieran, one of the beastfolk, broke the rules and attacked me!”

Aurora looked at her fake, sugary act and gave an annoyed cough.

“Speak normally. We can barely understand you.”

Claire looked at Fiona with open disgust.

Davy nodded in full agreement. His tiny body stayed coiled around Claire’s wrist; he stayed still, but his ears stood straight up. He was clearly enjoying the drama.

Fiona shot Aurora an unhappy look and silently cursed her. “Witch!”

Then she pointed at Zane. “It’s him! He poisoned me!”

She held out her injured arm. Thick, nasty pus had already started oozing from the wound.

Aurora recognized the injury at once. She exchanged a glance with Kieran. They both knew what had happened.

The male beastfolk immediately turned on Zane. “That’s going too far! How could you be so cruel to a female?”

Zane spoke calmly, “Yes, I poisoned her.”

He paused before continuing, “But aren’t any of you going to ask why?”

The crowd looked at one another.

Zane went on.

“While I was away, she gave the exact same poison to my youngling. Six had a dangerously high fever. He almost suffered permanent brain damage. If we’d come back any later, my son would have died.

“I simply returned what she gave us. An eye for an eye.”

The crowd exploded into shocked whispers.

“Poisoning a youngling is one of the worst crimes there is! Did Fiona really do that?”

Fiona quickly denied it, her voice sharp and trembling with fake tears.

“No! I didn’t!”

Claire looked at her as if she were an idiot.

“This isn’t something you can deny just because you say so. Someone saw you do it. You can’t talk your way out of this.”

Fiona looked around in panic. She shook her head.

“Who? That’s impossible! When I poisoned him, it was the middle of the night. Everyone was asleep-”

She froze. She had stopped herself too late.

The male beastfolk who had once been infatuated with her all stumbled backward as if she carried a deadly disease. Their trembling fingers pointed at her.

“So it really was you!” “You poisoned a child!” “What a vicious female!”

Realizing she’d let the truth slip, Fiona burst into tears. She dropped to her knees with a loud thud, then crawled over to Kieran, crying as she clutched at his leg.

“I lost my way for a moment, Kieran! I know I was wrong! I swear I’ll never do it again! Please don’t throw me out!”

Kieran looked down at her with disgust. He didn’t even bother to respond.

Aurora kicked her away and said, “If you hadn’t been useful to Rufus back then, we never would have saved your life. You’ve been eating well and living comfortably in our clan all this time, and this is how you repay us? By poisoning our younglings? What’s the point of keeping you around?”

Fiona crawled to Claire and reached for her leg, but Claire stepped aside. Fiona missed, crashed onto the ground, and came up with dirt smeared all over her face.

“Claire, I swear I’ll never go against you again! Please forgive me! We were both kidnapped by rogue beastfolk before. We went through that nightmare together. Please, give me the antidote!”

Corvin gave a faint smile. He ignored Fiona’s hopeful stare and looked straight at Claire.

“I don’t disagree,” he said calmly. “I want to suggest something else. Her crimes are beyond forgiveness. Why not hand her over to me? I happen to need a new medical test subject.”

“A medical test subject?” Claire repeated.

Corvin nodded.

“I’ve devoted my life to studying medicine. She can help me test new treatments. In a way, she’ll finally do something useful. Don’t worry.” A faint smile touched his lips. “Life with me won’t be pleasant.”

His dark eyes were hazy, as though hidden behind a thin veil. No one could tell what he was really thinking.

Fiona screamed in horror.

“No! I don’t want this! Dr. Black, I know you like me! You even said you wanted to be my beast mate! Help me this one time, and I’ll choose you as my beast mate! You know I still haven’t-”

“Enough.”

Corvin’s voice turned cold and menacing. One look from him silenced Fiona.

“I only felt anything for you because I was under the effect of your Rosefire poison. I’m not the only one. You poisoned many of the males in this clan. Do you really want me to name every one of them?”
