Claire suddenly pictured Corvin’s cold, distant face. Can he actually hatch eggs? Is he sure he won’t freeze them solid instead?

Sensing her uneasiness, Zane tightened his grip around her hand.

Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”

Led by Aurora, Claire leaned against Zane as they walked into the dim treehouse.

Corvin wasn’t inside.

Aurora didn’t seem surprised. She raised her voice and called out, Dr. Black, we’re here to check on the eggs.”

A moment later, Corvin’s deep, raspy voice came from somewhere high above.

Come up.

Aurora stepped outside the treehouse and spread her wings.

Do you want me to carry Claire up?she asked Zane.

Zane shook his head.

No.

He scooped Claire into his arms. With one powerful jump, he landed on the nearest branch. Then he

from branch to branch, climbing higher into the towering canopy.

sprang

Aurora nodded in approval and flew ahead to guide them.

The three of them continued upward through the thick branches. The canopy was packed with twisting limbs. Aurora had to work hard to weave through them, but Zane moved with ease. He was fast, light, and

surefooted.

Soon, sunlight filtered through the highest leaves. Then Claire saw it. A massive bird’s nest.

It was built from countless thin branches and measured nearly 30 feet across. It was packed tightly and built thick enough that no one below could see inside.

When they reached the side of the nest, the whole thing came into view.

The inside was lined with layers of animal hides. On top of them was a thick blanket of soft black feathers They looked incredibly warm and comfortable.

A giant crow rested in the center of the nest. His wings were slightly spread. Under the sunlight, his black feathers shimmered with flashes of rainbow colors.

What a beautiful shade of black!

But why would Jeffrey keep one pup?

Was he planning to use the little one as leverage against her?

She forced herself to stop thinking about it and looked back at the eggs.

No matter what, Jeffrey had at least returned 25 of them.

She knelt beside the nest and gently wrapped her arms around the warm eggs.

A peaceful smile spread across her face.

My little eggsMom’s here.

This was the second time she had held them.

The first had been the day they were born.

It felt like a lifetime had passed. Tears filled her eyes and rolled down onto the smooth shells, sparkling like morning dew.

Corvin watched her with quiet curiosity. It was the first time he had ever seen someone cry so beautifully.
