Chapter 311 No Going Out
Zane put his foot down after that, forbidding her from stepping outside at midday at all.
Finishes
Only once evening rolled around and the heat finally eased off could Claire sit out on the grass for a little while.
Zane worked away in the kitchen preparing dinner, Davy taught the younglings how to properly pounce and take.down prey, and Marcus stood behind Claire, fanning her gently with a woven palm fan while he chatted away beside her.
“Claire, how much longer until I can take this ribbon off? I want to see you so badly. I’ve wanted it for so long.”
He’d run out of patience ages ago.
Sure, doing things blindfolded carried its own particular thrill, but he ached to finally see Claire’s beautiful, teasing expressions with his own eyes.
The sight alone would completely overwhelm him.
Just imagining it left him struggling to hold himself together.
Claire smiled, her expression turning coy and playful.
“Don’t rush it. You’ve got at least another month to go. The more you push, the slower it’ll heal.”
Honestly, that timeline counted as fast.
That kind of injury would usually take a lot longer to heal.
This was his eyes, after all.
The moment Marcus heard “another month,” his enthusiasm deflated instantly, though the thought of what Claire might look like in his imagination sent his excitement surging right back.
Up among the thick branches, the large tree house neared completion, and Altair’s hands stilled the moment his gaze drifted down toward the female below.
Landon caught the dazed look on his face and immediately teased him with a grin.
“And here you kept insisting you don’t like Claire. Want me to count how many times you’ve zoned out staring at her today?”
Altair’s face flushed with embarrassment instantly, and he shot back in his own defense.
“You’re no better than me. You’ve been clutching that sketch she drew like it’s made of glass, and I’ve caught you grinning at it like an idiot more times than I can count.”
Landon glanced down at Claire beneath the tree, his smile turning faintly helpless.
Both of them had feelings for that female, but they were only Level 1 beastfolk, nowhere near strong enough to even hold their ground against one of her beast mates, let alone compete for her hand.

Finished
The more time he spent around her, the more clearly he understood the impossible gap separating Level 1 from Level 3, a divide so vast it crushed any real hope either of them had of ever bonding with Claire.
“I guess we only have ourselves to blame for being this weak. I never used to think about it much but now it just eats at me.
Landon let out a heavy sigh.

Altair kept his eyes locked on some distant point, unmoving, and after a long silence, he finally spoke.
“Maybe we should head to the Sacred Grounds ourselves.”
Landon froze in shock.
“The Sacred Grounds? That place is practically a death sentence. Rufus is a Level 2, and even he can barely protect himself out there. If we went, we’d just end up as another meal for whatever monsters live there.”
Altair pressed his lips together, stubborn and unwavering.
“And if we don’t go? Then you’ll never have a shot with the female you want. You’ll spend the rest of your life just watching from a distance.
He’d grown up an orphan, never once laying eyes on either parent since the day he was born, and watching Claire’s family live together in such harmony had stirred something deep and longing inside him.
If only he could find his way into a family like that someday.
Landon had no answer for that.
Down below the tree, Claire wrinkled her nose as the rich scent of roasting meat drifted out from the kitchen.
Normally that smell alone would have her mouth watering instantly.
But today, for some reason, a wave of nausea rose up in her stomach instead, and she pushed the fan aside. and hurried a short distance away.
“What’s wrong, Claire?”
Marcus heard the sudden sound of her rushed footsteps, followed by the unmistakable sound of retching, and fear gripped him as he chased after the noise.
Claire stood braced against a tree trunk, trying to bring something up, but her stomach held nothing at all, leaving her stuck dry heaving over and over.
Zane came running too, and the moment he saw how miserable she looked, he rushed to her side and pulled her close, rubbing gentle circles across her back while asking with obvious worry.
“What’s going on? Did I cook something that smells too strong? Did it make you sick?”
Claire finally managed to stop heaving, took the piece of hide Zane offered her, and wiped her mouth clean before managing a weak smile.

“I’m fine. This is probably just morning sickness.”
“Morning sickness?”
Zane and Marcus asked the question together, in perfect unison.
Finishes
Claire suddenly remembered she’d never experienced this before, which meant neither of them had any idea what it even meant, so she patiently explained.
