Chapter 322 Give Them Space

Finished/

Gale stood not far away, his eyes soft with pain as he watched Tyne, but he never took a single step forward, giving the two of them their space.

Zane gave him a quiet nod. The two males exchanged a brief, understanding look, then each turned their attention back to the person they cared about most.

Every day after that, Claire visited Wanda’s two-story house with one of her beast mates, sometimes doing light cleaning, sometimes just sitting quietly for a while.

She never let the younglings fall by the wayside either.

When Corvin saw Claire arrive with Davy at her side this time, something in him relaxed.

Around Zane, Corvin always felt completely exposed, every thought laid bare, every nerve drawn taut from the effort of keeping himself composed. The whole thing was exhausting.

Davy was far easier to deal with.

Claire kept at it with the younglings, and they’d warmed up to her enough by now that the whole group “crowded toward her the moment she arrived.

A burst of bright chirps and eager chatter filled the air all at once as the younglings rushed forward, each one trying to say something at the same time.

Not a single sound of it made sense to Claire.

Corvin actually smiled at that and offered her an explanation. “They’re saying the youngling in your belly is desperate to come out and join them.”

“You actually understand what they’re saying?” Claire stared at him.

To her ears, every single chirp sounded identical.

Maybe it was a guess.

Maybe it wasn’t a guess at all.

Because from that point on, no matter what the younglings said, Corvin translated every word with perfect accuracy, as if some unspoken channel existed between them that no one else could reach.

Something in Corvin’s usually shadowed eyes cleared in the sunlight, the cold edge softening just slightly, and the faint curve at the corner of his mouth stayed as he watched the younglings and Claire among them.

Davy stood rigidly off to the side, tall enough that his weight was actually making the nest platform tilt at a slight angle.

He didn’t notice at all, his gaze locked entirely on Claire and her rounded belly. “Watch yourself, sweetheart. Don’t let the younglings bump into your belly.”

Claire smiled and nodded.

The younglings couldn’t speak yet, but they were surprisingly thoughtful about it, never crowding near her belly and choosing instead to nuzzle against her sides and her back.

The nine-headed ghost bird heard Davy’s words and all nine heads swiveled toward him in perfect, eerie unison, each expression shifting into something peculiar.

A voice pressed into Davy’s mind. He reached for a skill he hadn’t used in a long time and activated his mind-reading ability just in time to catch what the nine-headed ghost bird was thinking.

What came through was unmistakably clear. “Daddy Davy is such a coward! He’s probably from the mouse clan!”

Davy felt the sting of that and quickly passed the youngling’s thoughts along to Claire.

Claire listened with a growing smile, and the look she turned on the nine-headed ghost bird softened considerably.

So the little creature had already accepted Claire as their mother. There was no other explanation for calling Davy “daddy” like that.

All those times she’d patiently introduced her beast mates to the younglings had finally paid off.

A deep, warm satisfaction settled into Claire’s chest.

Davy, who’d been waiting for some comfort from Claire, stood there looking every bit the part of a sulking child who’d been denied candy.

But the moment Claire’s eyes found him, every trace of it vanished, and he answered her with the most open, good-natured smile he had.

Corvin watched from the side. What an absolute lummox.

Then Davy fixed him with a sharp, threatening glare.

Corvin immediately thought better of whatever had been forming in his head.

So Davy wasn’t nearly as simple as he’d assumed.

Claire could tell the younglings had grown fond of her, and she yentured carefully. “Do you little ones want to come play at my house? You could all sleep over with me tonight.”

It was the first time she’d ever said anything like that to them/ and after the words left her, she waited anxiously for their reaction.

But every single youngling shook their head. Only the nine-headed ghost bird hesitated, glancing between Claire and Corvin with an expression that couldn’t quite decide.

A Sunfire Raven waddled over and nudged the nine-headed ghost bird firmly back into the group with a bump of its head.
