“His wounds are dressed and he’s awake, but he won’t hold on long before he goes under again. Whatever you need to ask, ask it now.”

He turned toward Claire, his frown deepening at the sheer size of her belly.

“Why are you here? You’re about to give birth any day now. You can’t keep running around like this. Let the chief handle it.”

Claire couldn’t just stand aside for this.

“A beast swarm isn’t something I can sit out. It affects my safety too. I want to know what we’re dealing with, and if it comes to it, my beast mates can help.”

The chief’s face brightened with visible relief, and he nodded. “Claire, that’s wonderful to hear!”

As chief, he’d lived through a few beast swarms before, though none had been particularly

severe.

He had no way of knowing what this one would bring until they got some real answers.

Savage beasts were plentiful across the Beast World continent, and under normal circumstances each one held its own territory and rarely strayed from it. But every few years, a beast swarm broke out.

When it did, savage beasts gathered in overwhelming numbers and swept from west to east in a single unstoppable wave. Nothing the frenzied horde encountered could slow it down. Everything in its path got crushed flat and ground into nothing.

The stronger beasts in the swarm would tear straight through any clan in their way, devouring beastfolk whole and leaving devastation that could take generations to recover from.

They stepped inside together. The injured beastfolk on the wooden table had his eyes open, but only just. His lips moved weakly, dried blood still caked at the corners of his mouth.

Claire moved forward quickly and brought a bowl of water to his lips.

He took one small, careful sip, turned a grateful look on Claire, then shifted his gaze to the chief.

“Chief, I’m from the cat clan not far from here. Yesterday the beast swarm hit us. This one is bigger than anything we’ve ever seen, and I’m the only one who made it out.”

The chief knew the cat clan. They weren’t far away, but they’d always been a modest settlement, barely qualifying as mid-sized.

And the beast swarm had wiped them out completely.

Claire stood off to the side, a cold dread spreading through her with every word. Back in the modern world, she’d read about what army ants could do when they swept through an area, leaving nothing living in their wake.

A beast swarm sounded far worse than that.

The injured beastfolk cried for a little while, and then the grief and exhaustion overtook him all at once and he slipped back into unconsciousness.

The chief led everyone back outside.

Aurora spoke first.

“What do we do? We’re right next door to where they were. If that swarm comes this way, we could be wiped out just like they were.”

Kieran’s expression stayed grave. He thought it through carefully before he spoke.

“We send our fastest fliers to scout the area and go from there. The swarm might have already changed direction and never come near us.”

He sent someone to fetch the clan’s fastest fliers, and the ones who showed up were Landon and Altair.

Word had clearly reached them on the way over. Both their faces were tight with tension, and the smiles they managed for Claire were strained at the edges.

Kieran laid out his instructions.

“Landon, Altair, you’re our fastest. Head out toward the cat clan’s territory right now and locate the beast swarm. I need to know the scale of it, the types of beasts involved, and their numbers. Most importantly, I need to know which direction it’s heading.”

Landon and Altair answered in sharp, unified agreement.

Landon shifted into his golden eagle form and launched skyward without hesitation.

Altair followed, his body reshaping into a slightly smaller peregrine falcon, and he cast one quick glance back at Claire before rising after Landon.

Aurora patted Claire’s hand gently.

“Don’t let it worry you too much. Head home and rest for now. If anything urgent comes up, I’ll have someone come find you right away.”

A pang of guilt moved through Claire.

When she’d been with the fox clan, Jeffrey and his band of rogue beastfolk had destroyed them.

Then she’d ended up in Grimstone, and nothing good had come of that either.
