Zane set the beastfolk down. When Kieran saw Altair’s pale, lifeless face, he immediately waved for others to carry him to the healer’s tree house.
He turned to Claire and Zane, gratitude clear in his voice.
“Claire, we owe you and your beast mates everything. The beast swarm hasn’t broken through the clan yet. Although a small number of them appeared around the clan, they were all killed by the guards!”
Still, there were casualties. Corvin’s tree house was already packed. Injured beastfolk lay even outside on the open ground. Corvin was swamped, barely able to stop for a second.
Zane shifted into his human form, holding Claire in his arms.
Claire nodded.
“When we came back, there were still small groups heading this way. Be ready.”
One sentence was enough to set Kieran and the beastfolk on edge. They tightened their grip on their spears and stared at the oncoming swarm.
The beast swarm kept closing in. The first wave reached the trench, unable to stop in time, and tumbled straight in, impaled on the bamboo stakes below.
Those behind saw the trench and tried to leap across. But they did not have Zane’s strength. None could clear the gap. One after another, they fell in.
Roars filled the air.
A few flying savage beasts escaped Davy’s pursuit. Seeing the chaos below, they circled and screeched in cruel delight.
What awaited them was a line of eagle clan flying beastfolk armed with spears.
With nowhere to run, the savage beasts were wiped out.
Soon, no savage beasts remained outside the clan. But Claire was worried about Marcus and Davy.
She was just about to ride off with Zane to look for the two of them when a sharp pain hit her belly.
Claire’s face scrunched up in pain. Seeing that, Zane felt a stab in his chest. He scooped her up and hurried toward Corvin’s tree house.

Behind them, Kieran shouted, “Zane, tell Claire not to worry. I’ll go find Marcus and Davy myself!”
By then, Claire was already drenched in sweat. Pome’s voice kept ringing in her mind, one alert after another.
“Master, the fourth litter of younglings is about to be born.”
“Master, take the pain immunity pill now.”
“Master, the first one is crowning. Stay strong!”
Claire swallowed the pill, and the sharp pain in her lower abdomen vanished at once. Only steady waves of contractions remained, reminding her that the birth had begun.
This delivery came too quickly. They had not even reached Corvin’s tree house when the first youngling was already on its way out.
A sharp squeeze came and went, and a smooth, round egg slipped into Zane’s hands.
“I-it’s… out?”
Zane stammered for the first time.
It happened so fast. The egg had been born right into his hands.
The shell was slick, still smeared with blood, but the warmth in his palms made him feel no disgust at all. Instead, his chest tightened with concern for Claire.
“Mm. After so many births, it’s bound to get easier. Put the egg in my arms and hurry to Dr. Black. Otherwise, they’ll all be born on the way.”
Claire took the bird egg and held it close. Soon, a mechanical voice sounded in her mind.
“Host has given birth to the 90th beastling. Species: golden-winged roc. Gender: male. Level: 3. Reward: Storage space upgraded, allowing the host to enter.”
Faint golden patterns shimmered across the shell, giving it an unusual glow.
Claire felt a surge of relief listening to the system’s voice.
At last, the system had granted her wish. From now on, she could enter the storage space herself. If danger came, she could hide there and come out when it was safe.
Zane tightened his hold and broke into a run. With each step, they covered over 30 feet. The trees blurred past on both sides, and Claire almost felt dizzy.
