Chapter 338 You’re the Best

When he saw Claire open her eyes, he immediately asked, “Did you send the eggs into the storage space?
Claire smiled warmly.
“Yep! Once we get home, I’ll take you inside to see them.”
The two of them carried the remaining fox younglings toward the entrance of the clan.
“I wonder how Marcus and Davy are doing. Is the beast swarm still threatening the clan?”
Claire couldn’t help worrying. If she hadn’t gone into labor so suddenly, she never would have left Marcus and Davy behind.
Still, remembering how terrifyingly strong they were eased some of the knot in her chest.
On the way, the fox younglings woke up once. Claire and Zane found a quiet spot and fed them their very first meal since birth.
There were too many younglings, so they had to alternate between formula and breast milk.
The newborns didn’t eat much. Before long, every little belly was full, and they drifted back to sleep.
After thinking it over, Claire decided to place the fox younglings into the storage space together with the wooden bed.
“Zane, why don’t you go into the storage space and look after the younglings? I can go to the clan entrance and ask Kieran what happened by myself.”
Zane refused and insisted on staying by her side.
Not long after they walked away, a brown cobra silently slithered out
The scent of the younglings still lingered in the air. It carried Claire’s sweet fragrance and Rufus’s icy scent. making him love and resent it at the same time.
The cobra watched Claire and Zane disappear into the distance. A complicated emotion flickered through his vertical pupils. Soon, he slipped out of the clan, weaving swiftly through the undergrowth until he reached a nest built from layers of fallen leaves.
That was his home.
At the end of a narrow tunnel barely wider than his body lay a surprisingly spacious chamber.
The branches overhead weren’t completely dense, allowing sunlight to stream through the gaps and illuminate the little den.
Curled atop soft beast hides at the bottom was a tiny fox cub.
She wasn’t very big, but her fur was an opaline color. Under the sunlight, it reflected dazzling light wherever the sun touched it.

Behind her spread nine fluffy tails, fanned out across the beast hides to dry. Wisps of white mistrose gently from the damp fur.
When the cobra entered, the fox youngling didn’t panic. Instead, she happily called out/Daddy, you’re back!”
Her tiny, baby-soft voice was so adorable that the cobra nearly toppled over.
He answered, “Mm. Did you finish your bath?”
The nine-tailed opaline fox cub blinked up at him with bright, watery eyes and nodded.
“Mhm! All done!”
She stretched out a chubby paw and pointed at the wooden bucket nearby.
The cobra slithered over and looked inside. The water was cloudy and dirty. Clearly she hadn’t been lying.
Gripping the bucket with his jaws, he dragged it outside.
His movements were smooth and natural, as though he’d done it hundreds of times before.
When he returned, the fox cub gazed at him with sparkling admiration. “Daddy treats me the best!”
The cobra gently rubbed the underside of his jaw against her tiny head. She was so small that even his head was larger than her entire body. It looked as though one bite would be enough for him to swallow the fragile little fox whole.
Yet she wasn’t scared in the slightest. She even mischievously pushed her head upward with all her strength. bumping against him so hard that even his thick body shifted sideways.
“Bae, if you found your mommy someday, would you still want me?”
The fox cub seemed too young to understand. She tilted her tiny head and thought about it for a very long time until she grew drowsy. Just before falling asleep, she murmured, “I like Daddy the most! I’d never… not want… Daddy…”
Then she drifted off to sleep.
The cobra stared at her tiny sleeping form for a long time. Another figure surfaced in his memories. The colors were a little different, but it was someone he could never forget.
Slowly, he coiled himself into a circle around the little fox, sheltering her in the center.
Before closing his eyes, he glanced at the section missing from the end of his tail. He let out a deep sigh, Tucked the broken tail beneath his body, and fell asleep as well.
At the clan entrance, Claire spotted Kieran and Landon standing together and hurried toward them.
She had barely taken a couple of steps before Zane scooped her back into his arms.
“Easy! You just gave birth!”
Seeing Kieran and Landon both looking their way, Claire quickly calmed herself and obediently let Zane
