Chapter 76 Their Lair
After putting down the fur pouch, Zane turned around and ran back.
Tyne shouted after him twice. When she realized she couldn’t stop him, she gave up.
Finished
She opened the fur pouch and saw the chubby younglings wriggling uneasily inside. Some even had tears stuck at the corners of their eyes.
“Poor little ones. They must feel that Claire is in danger too.”
She sighed heavily.
Everyone thought Claire was probably finished.
Those rogue beastfolk showed no mercy. They killed without hesitation!
The wind and snow became even stronger.
A thick curtain of white snow blocked Rufus’s sight. While flying, he kept lowering his head, trying to spot the rogue beastfolk’s trail.
But he lost them.
Snow covered their bodies and tracks quickly. In only a short time, everything below looked completely white.
Even when he risked flying lower, brushing past branches while searching everywhere, he still couldn’t find their path.
Rufus felt frustrated.
“Damn it! Even the sky is against me! You useless heavens!”
A streak of purple lightning flashed across the sky, followed by thunder right beside him.
Rufus quickly shut his mouth.
“Where did they take Claire?!”
Zane’s furious roar echoed from below.
Rufus shivered, his voice turning weak.
“I… I lost them! The snow is too heavy. I couldn’t see anything.”
Zane was so furious that he almost wanted to burn this foolish bird alive, but there was nothing he could do.
Jeffrey was far too cunning. Even when attacking a small clan, he had used tricks, sending part of his group to fake an attack at the entrance while secretly blocking the escape route with Fiona’s help.
Shaking off someone like Rufus had been easy.

Chapter 76 Their Lair
“The younglings are with Tyne. They’re about three miles behind us. Go take them and head to the eagle clan first. I’ll stay here and search for Claire.”
Rufus didn’t like that idea.
“I’m staying to find Claire. You go back. I already told you where my clan is!”
Zane sneered. “And how exactly are you planning to find her?
“If you hadn’t lost their trail, would I even need to stay behind?”
“I didn’t mean to.”
“Besides, Jeffrey hates you and must have taken precautions. You’ll just be wasting your time here. Don’t worry. I’ll bring Claire to the eagle clan.”
Zane’s words made perfect sense. Rufus couldn’t argue with that.
After Rufus left, Zane went back to the place where Claire had been captured and carefully searched every inch of ground.
Once he had gone far away, the rogue beastfolk underground listened to his footsteps fade above them and snickered.
“Boss is really smart!”
“Of course! Do you think someone dumb like you could ever take Boss’s place?”
“Be quiet! Boss is about to speak.”
Deep inside the underground tunnel, Jeffrey’s snake body was coiled tightly, with Claire trapped in the middle.
Her mouth had been tied shut, so she couldn’t even make a muffled sound. All she could do was glare at Jeffrey with tear–filled eyes.
He ignored her and gave orders to the rogue beastfolk to dig their way back to the lair underground.
An ugly mole beastfolk moved ahead of the others.
He changed into his beast form and dug into the dirt with his thick front claws, carving out a tunnel.
He kept digging like that for half a day. From time to time, he poked his head out to check which way they were going. By the time night came, they finally made it to an underground cave.
The moment they stepped inside, Claire realized the space was much larger.
The huge limestone cave had been turned into a hideout for rogue beastfolk. Food they had stolen was stacked everywhere. At the same time, stifled sobs filled the air.
Claire looked around and noticed a vine cage in one corner. Inside, over 20 female beastfolk were trapped.
Most of them were fox clan females she knew. Only a few were strangers to her. But every single one looked pale, thin–faced, and weak, like they could collapse at any time.

Without exception, they had bruises both old and new, bite marks, and even open wounds with curled edges that smelled rotten.
“Welcome to my kingdom, female!”
Jeffrey’s deep, magnetic voice sounded right by her ear.
Claire shivered hard.
