After Daphne became a vegetable, Hendrix still wanted to take care of her for the rest of his life.

He loved her.

But he knew that only by staying in the hospital did she have any chance of waking up.

Back then, it was Scarlett who insisted on sending her to Brookriver Rehabilitation Hospital.

Scarlett shook her head. “Dad, I was wrong. I’ll bring Mom home tomorrow.”

Hendrix got excited. “Okay, okay! Bringing her back is better. I’ll take care of her myself. I don’t really trust other caregivers anyway.”

Scarlett’s eyes turned red.

She hung up.

The next day, Scarlett went to Brookriver Rehabilitation Hospital. She handled her mom’s discharge and arranged for an ambulance to take them back to Southyra.

Southyra was only about an hour from the city, not far at all.

Even though people called it the countryside, it was still a town with everything it needed, with a population of 200,000 to 300,000.

The Sanchezes lived in an area on the edge of town. They had their own land and a two–story house, with big front and back yards.

When Scarlett got out of the ambulance, she saw Hendrix.

Hendrix was already in his 40s. He was tall, but very thin, and his back was starting to hunch a little.

When he saw Scarlett and Daphne, his eyes turned red.

The medical staff carried Daphne into the room.

Scarlett paid them, and only then did they leave.

Looking at her mother lying on the bed, Scarlett finally felt a bit relieved.

Honestly, she was worried about leaving her mom at the hospital.

Now that she knew Leona and Hazel were up to no good, her mom being at that hospital felt

Hendrix was a good cook. Ever since she was little, he had always been the one cooking at home.

Scarlett nodded and followed him to the living room to eat.

The table was full of dishes, all her favorites.

Hendrix then called Rory to come downstairs for lunch.

Both kids took Daphne’s last name.

Rory was 14 this year, in 8h grade.

He wasn’t very tall yet, only about 5’5“, and hadn’t hit his growth spurt.

Rory looked a bit like Scarlett. He had a clean, gentle look, but he was super shy and usually kept his head down.

When he saw his sister, he just looked up for a second and mumbled, “Scarlett.”

Scarlett smiled. “Rory, come eat!”

Seeing her brother made her heart ache.

Everyone in this family loved her.

When Rory was little, he always followed her around, calling her name and asking her to take him out to play.

When he got a bit older, he would secretly use his small allowance to buy her snacks and hair ties.

In her last life, something terrible happened to Rory.

She would never let that happen again.

The three of them sat down and ate together.

After the meal, Scarlett tried to help with the dishes, but they wouldn’t let her. Rory ended up taking the dishes to the sink to wash them.

Scarlett took a walk around the yard. When no one was looking, she went to the old well in the backyard and poured half a bucket of spiritual essence into it.

The well had been there for decades.

Even though the house had tap water, they only used it for showers and laundry.

For drinking and cooking, they still used water from the well.

Daphne had always said the well water tasted better–fresh and sweet–and didn’t like tap water.

So all these years, the family had kept the habit of drinking water from the well.

Even though the spiritual essence would slowly fade away after mixing into the water, it didn’t matter. Every time she came back, she could add more.

After that, Scarlett went to the front yard. She heard the cracking voices of two teenage boys calling for Rory from outside the gate.

“Rory, come out and play!”

But when Rory heard them, his face darkened. He stiffened and glanced back at Hendrix and Scarlett.

Scarlett frowned slightly.

She didn’t come back today just to bring her mom home.
