He hadn’t expected Scarlett to be here on a case.

He glanced at his daughter.

Vivian was a total tomboy, fearless and bold.

He realized with a shudder that she had crossed paths with a dangerous kidnapper yesterday.

It was a miracle she hadn’t alerted the man.

Scarlett said, “After Nala’s treatment, I may need to borrow her.”

Warren hesitated. “Ms. Sanchez, can Nala really be cured? Are you planning to use her to track the suspect?” He’d gotten the full picture from Vivian–the suspect had left traces and scent behind.

Nala was a police dog, and her greatest asset was her sense of smell.

Police dog tracking was all scent–based.

He understood the utility of borrowing her. She probably wanted Nala to sniff the suspect out.

But tracking dogs only worked within a certain range,

The suspect had driven out of town ten hours ago,

How could a dog track a cold scent over such a distance?

Scarlett said, “Nala can be cured. And yes, I want her help tracking him.”

Everything was spotless.

A ten–year–old Labrador was sprawled lazily in the yard; it merely lifted its head to glance at the newcomers before going back to sleep.

Vivian’s grandparents were home. Her mother was out at work.

Vivian introduced Scarlett to the old couple.

They liked her immediately. Once they heard she was here to help Nala, they couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Scarlett started with acupuncture. She got Nala to lie still, and within minutes, the dog was covered in needles.

When Scarlett turned around, all three generations of Efrons were squatting behind her.

Vivian swallowed. “Scarlett, is… is that all it takes?”

Scarlett smiled. “That’s it. Half an hour and the needles come out. Just make sure she doesn’t move and knock them loose.”

Most of the needles were clustered around Nala’s head and nose.

Nala was remarkably well–behaved. Perfectly still.

She seemed to understand Scarlett was helping her.

Scarlett couldn’t resist. She gently stroked Nala’s head. “Good girl. Once you’ve had your medicine, there’ll be a treat.”

The family didn’t think much of it.

They assumed Scarlett meant the big beef bone Warren had been saving for Nala.

It was Nala’s favorite.

After the needles were in, Scarlett went to brew the herbal medicine.

Half an hour later, the concoction was ready, enriched with a few drops of spiritual essence to accelerate recovery.

She prepared a three–day supply, sealing them into individual daily portions.
