Chapter 359 A Secret She Carries

“Thank you, Mr. Grant.”

She didn’t explain why she’d needed to smell the blood.

Cody didn’t ask.

He passed the vials to his colleague.

Once they were alone, Scarlett asked, “Did Killian say where he got the sigils? The ones he planted on himself and on the neighbor across from Nathan’s apartment?”

Cody said, “He cracked early. He claims that the bald man and his crew gave them to him. He apparently had no direct contact with Weston. About two weeks ago, he met the four fugitives. They offered him 200,000 dollars up front and another 300,000 dollars after the job. He took the bait.”

Scarlett nodded.

The picture was coming together.

Weston, for reasons still unclear, had wanted his own daughter kidnapped.

He’d somehow found four of the country’s most–wanted fugitives, and he paid them handsomely to kidnap Ivy.

The fugitives couldn’t show their faces in any populated area, so they needed a clean proxy.

They, in turn, had recruited Killian and promised him 500,000 dollars to be the one who actually grabbed Ivy.

As for the sigils, Scarlett suspected the bald man’s crew had nothing to do with their creation.

They probably came from Weston.

Cody brought up something else. “Scarlett, those three conscious suspects have been screaming nonstop- saying they’re in agony. What exactly is happening to them?”

It was becoming a problem.

The bald man–still in the hospital from the kick Scarlett had delivered to his ribs, fracturing bone–was in the same state.

Scarlett had clearly pulled her punch; otherwise, it would have been far worse.

But he, too, kept wailing about unbearable cold seeping into his marrow, and pain that wouldn’t stop.

Even the interrogation had been difficult–the men shivered through every answer.

Scarlett drew her dagger and handed it to Cody. “Take this into the room with them. Give it a couple of minutes. They’ll be fine.”

The dagger sensed her intent–go in, absorb the dark energy from the injured men, and don’t harm the person carrying it.

It reined in its aura.

Even so, Cody felt the blade’s chill the moment his fingers closed around the hilt–cold as a shard of deep winter.

He knew this was no ordinary weapon.

He didn’t ask questions. He carried the dagger into the interrogation room.

Within two minutes, the screaming stopped.

Cody brought the dagger back out, then accompanied Scarlett to the hospital. Two minutes in the bald man’s room, and his howling ceased as well.

Cody marveled at it, but true to form, asked nothing. He returned the dagger to Scarlett.

Nathan had already taken Ivy home.

Scarlett headed back to her villa.

That afternoon, Ivy called.

She was inviting Scarlett over for dinner.

Nathan was cooking.

Ivy insisted Scarlett know that her brother was an excellent cook.

Scarlett smiled and said she’d be there.

She drove to the Johnson residence, stopping on the way to pick up fruit and small gifts–things a little girl would like.

Ivy lit up when she saw Scarlett at the door and threw her arms around her.

Nathan was busy in the kitchen.

Ivy pulled Scarlett to the sofa and curled up against her side.

“Scarlett, can we go to the set together when it’s time?”

Calvert’s historical drama, The Ancestor, had started filming. Both Scarlett and Ivy were due to report to

the set soon.

Scarlett smiled. “Of course.”

They were both playing the same character–Princess Mona–at different ages.

That was how they’d first met.

Calvert had called her a few days ago, telling her to get ready.

She’d been planning to head to the set within the week.

Ivy chattered happily, holding Scarlett’s hand the entire time.

Before long, Nathan emerged with the food. “Scarlett, Ivy–dinner’s ready.”

Scarlett helped carry dishes out.

Four dishes and a soup–just right for three.

The food was genuinely good.

Nathan took excellent care of his sister.

Even knowing it was their own father who’d ordered her kidnapping, Ivy didn’t seem particularly heartbroken.

After dinner and cleanup-

Ivy pulled Scarlett back to the sofa.

Her small face was completely serious.

“Scarlett, I want to tell you a secret.”

Scarlett looked at the girl, then at Nathan.

His expression was grave.

“Weston kidnapped Ivy probably because of this. Because of Ivy’s secret.”

Ivy’s secret. Not theirs.

Scarlett understood: whatever this was, it lived inside Ivy alone.

What could it be?

Could it be connected to the forces behind Leona?

What exactly was this secret?

Everything, she suspected, traced back to whatever Ivy was about to reveal.

Ivy gripped Scarlett’s hand tightly.

“Scarlett… there’s something inside me.”

Scarlett blinked. “Inside you? What is it?”
