Fred was shaking as he spoke, “Luke, what do we do? The river is so fast and deep. Rory’s sister jumped in to save him. Won’t they both get swept away? Can they even survive?”

Luke stared at the river and didn’t say a word.

His face was dark and tense.

Then he glanced at Rory.

Rory was focused on the river and didn’t notice them talking.

Luke leaned over and whispered something in Fred’s ear.

Fred looked at him in shock, then looked at Rory.

In the end, Fred stayed quiet.

Just then, a woman’s voice suddenly came from behind them. “Milo, slow down! Milo!”

A woman walked out from around the big tree.

She looked about 30, dressed like someone from the city.

Rory didn’t recognize her and knew she wasn’t from the town.

The woman saw the three boys and looked ahead, but didn’t see her son. She quickly asked, “Hi, have you seen my son? His name is Milo Manning. He’s about five or six, looks kind of chubby and tough. He just ran this way.”

At first, she didn’t think much of it. But when she noticed the boys‘ pale faces and saw them staring at the river, her heart dropped.

Then she saw a small toy car lying by the riverbank.

That was the toy Milo had been holding.

The woman’s face turned pale. “Where is Milo?”

Rory turned to look at her and said with difficulty, “Just now a little kid ran over here and was-”

Before Rory could finish, Luke suddenly shouted, “It was him! He just pushed a chubby little

Luke and Fred looked at each other, then started yelling for help, too.

They were loud. People working nearby heard the shouting and rushed over.

“Rory, Luke, Fred, what are you doing here? What happened?”

The people who came were from nearby. They knew the boys.

“What’s going on?”

Luke shouted, “This lady’s kid was pushed into the river by Rory!”

Only Luke, Fred, Rory, and the little boy knew what really happened.

Now Rory’s sister had jumped in to save the kid.

With the river moving so fast, Luke didn’t believe a girl could get the kid out alive.

He was sure they would both drown.

That meant only the three of them knew the truth.

And Fred would back him up.

All they had to do was insist Rory did it.

When the men and women around heard that, all their faces changed.

The woman started crying loudly. “Milo! Milo! Where are you?”

Rory glared at Luke. “You’re lying. You pushed him, not me.”

Fred shouted too, “Rory, what’s wrong with you? The kid just got in your way. You got impatient and shoved him. You didn’t expect him to stumble and fall into the river.”

“Enough!” someone yelled. “Stop arguing. Saving the kid comes first. You kids are crazy for playing near the river when it’s flooding. And Rory, no matter how mad you were, you can’t push someone here. Quick, tell me exactly where he fell in!”
