Scarlett and Nathan understood at once.

Whatever that thing was, it was probably like a parasite. It really might be able to move from one person to another. Still, a transfer like that probably was not easy. There had to be some specific condition attached to it.

By now, they had learned quite a lot. The only question was whether Weston, after being arrested, would confess who had given him the idea, handed him the sigils, and told him to kidnap Ivy.

For a while, the room fell silent.

Scarlett didn’t stay long. She was getting ready to leave, and before she went, she said to Ivy and Nathan, “Let’s wait for Officer Cody’s update and see what Weston says in his statement.”

For now, that was all they could do.

Ivy was reluctant to let her go. After Scarlett left, she muttered. “Nathan, it would be so nice if I could live with Scarlett.”

Nathan said nothing. He only stood there, watching Scarlett’s retreating figure through the doorway.

When Scarlett got back to the villa, two more days passed before Cody called.

On the phone, he told her, “Weston confessed. He said he kidnapped Ivy because he wanted the Johnsons‘ shares. He wanted something to happen to both Nathan and Ivy so he could take complete control of the shares left to him by his ex–wife, along with the shares left behind by the two brothers. He said he’d wanted to have children with his current wife for a long time, but the agreement with the Johnsons kept him tied down.”

After saying that, Cody had a lot he wanted to ask.

Was that really the whole reason?

Was there something else behind it?

Did Ivy and Nathan have some kind of secret?

In the end, though, he asked none of it.

If the case really involved the occult, then it would be far harder to handle.

Scarlett knew this was the only way it could end, at least on the surface. No matter who had been backing Weston, revealing Ivy’s secret would sound too absurd to be used in a confession. It might even give Weston a way out. He could claim mental illness, say he believed there was something inside his daughter, and that he kidnapped her to get it out.

As things stood, Weston was looking at no less than ten years in prison. Killian would get about the same.

As for the four vicious fugitives, once their past crimes were added in, the bald one would most likely be sentenced to death. The other three would probably receive suspended death sentences.

Nala had also performed outstandingly in the case. She returned to her post and was even awarded a commendation.

Vivian was thrilled. She called Scarlett just to tell her the news.

Cody had also been in touch with Ivy and Nathan. He told them Weston had been arrested and had confessed, but only to wanting the Johnsons‘ shares. He claimed he hadn’t wanted to remain under Nathan and Ivy’s control, which was why he had kidnapped Ivy.

Both Ivy and Nathan knew full well that Weston had done it because of the secret attached to Ivy, but neither of them said anything.

Now that Weston had been arrested, the shares under his name would be redistributed to Ivy and Nathan according to the agreement.

Nathan also had to start dealing with company matters, but he didn’t leave Brookriver City. He stayed there with Ivy.

Because Ivy had said she wanted to live closer to Scarlett, Nathan handled company business from home through video meetings. After what had happened, there was no way he would leave Ivy alone. He was extremely careful whenever he picked her up from school or took her there, and he had the entire house fitted with a smart surveillance system.

A few more days passed before Scarlett got a call from Cedric. It was time for her to join the production of The Ancestor.

So Scarlett asked her homeroom teacher for another half month of leave. By the time she returned from filming, final exams wouldn’t be far off.

The day before she left for the set, Scarlett called Ivy.

Ivy sounded delighted. “Scarlett, I’m going to the set tomorrow too.”

The Ancestor had a large cast, so not everyone joined production at the same time, and they wouldn’t all wrap at the same time either. Their scenes were scheduled separately.

Scarlett and Ivy were playing Princess Mona in her teenage years and childhood, respectively. Since they would be joining the production together, they could also go over scenes together.

Ivy asked happily, “Scarlett, which flight are you taking tomorrow? I’ll have Nathan book mine in a

minute.”

Scarlett told her the flight the company had booked for her.

After hanging up, Ivy excitedly told Nathan, and he immediately booked tickets for the same flight.

Of course he was going with her.

Ivy didn’t have an agent, so Nathan was basically serving as one. And after the kidnapping, there was no way he trusted anyone else to look after his sister.

The only reason he had let Ivy act at all was because he thought it might be a wonderful experience in

Early the next morning, Scarlett posted a notice in her online shop.

Her little store had officially taken off. She already had a batch of products lined up and ready to be listed, but she was heading to the film set. Even if customers placed orders, she wouldn’t be able to ship anything.

It was only a small shop, and she had never hired anyone to help. She handled everything herself, day in and day out.

So for now, all she could do was put up a notice on the store page.
