Chapter 43 Unexpected Guests
Flip, flip, flip. Page after page.
Scarlett finished everything around five o’clock.
The three of them ate dinner in the yard.

Since it was summer, it was still bright. Scarlett said, “I’m heading back to the city. If Matthew calls, ignore him. Just block him. I already did.”
She had brought Daphne home.
Matthew would probably find out in a couple of days.
When he couldn’t reach Scarlett, he would definitely call Hendrix.
They didn’t need to deal with him.
Hendrix and Rory didn’t say anything, but they both understood.
Scarlett avoided her real father this much because the past five years with the Baileys had been a nightmare.
They felt bad for her.
After dinner, Scarlett planned to take the bus back to the city.
She still had to keep filming the show the next day.
Before leaving, she transferred the 100,000 reward money she got from the Brookriver City Police Department to Hendrix.
She told him to use it to open the clinic and to help take care of Daphne, since that all cost money.
She didn’t really need money right now.
She still owed a lot in contract penalties, but 100,000 wasn’t going to make much of a difference.
She’d figure out the penalties later.
Once she finished explaining everything, Scarlett was about to leave.
As soon as she opened the gate, she saw the chubby boy she’d rescued the day before standing outside.
His mother was there too, along with an older woman.
Milo’s eyes lit up when he saw Scarlett. “Thank you for saving me yesterday!”
Alina said, “Hi, Ms. Sanchez. My name is Alina Manning. This is my son, Milo Manning, and this is my mother–in–law. Thank you for saving Milo. If it weren’t for you, I…” She couldn’t finish the sentence.
Thinking about it still scared her.

After the ambulance arrived, she took Milo straight to the hospital for a full checkup.
The doctor said Milo was fine.
Seeing how energetic he was, they let him leave the hospital today.
So she came with her mother–in–law to thank Scarlett.

It was only after going to the hospital yesterday that Alina realized the girl who saved Milo looked familiar.
She was Scarlett Sanchez–the one from the showbiz with a really bad reputation.
“I’m glad Milo is okay,” Scarlett said.
Sophia Manning, Milo’s grandma, also thanked her. “Thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I’d never have forgiven myself.”
It turned out the whole situation was kind of her fault.
If it weren’t for her, Milo wouldn’t have gone through something like that.
She originally lived in Brookriver City, but she didn’t like the air quality there.
Once she retired, she decided to move out to the countryside to spend her days doing woodwork.
That’s how she found Deerold Town, right next to Southyra.
The town had a river and mountains nearby, and the environment was great.
She rented a small courtyard here and spent her days working with wood.
Her son and daughter–in–law cared about her.
Every month, they brought Milo to visit her.
But this time, something went wrong.
If Scarlett hadn’t been there, she didn’t know how she could have kept living.
After Sophia finished speaking, her eyes suddenly drifted to the wooden building behind Scarlett.
She herself had studied ancient architecture.
She was a retired professor.
One look at the roof’s curved eaves, and she could tell the carving technique was on another level. The way the wood pieces fit together with complex joinery was perfect; there wasn’t a single gap.
She also spotted several ancient restoration and carving techniques that were supposed to be long lost.
Sophia froze.
Alina followed up with another thank–you.

“Scarlett, thank you so, so much.”

After she said that, she expected her mother–in–law to go along and bring the gifts inside. But Sophia didn’t
move.
Alina looked up and saw her mother–in–law staring into the yard behind Scarlett, her eyes filled with shock, confusion, and excitement.
“What’s wrong?” Alina asked.
Sophia finally snapped out of it and pointed at the wooden building behind Scarlett–which already had an old–fashioned feel to it. She said excitedly, “Alina, look…”
Alina looked up.
A building with an ancient feel to it.
Seeing Alina’s confused face, Sophia couldn’t help explaining, “That wooden house isn’t using the modern joinery we use today. It’s the original techniques.
“Look at this craftsmanship. And it doesn’t stop there. There are other ancient construction and carving methods in there too, ones that have been lost long ago. Which master did this?”
Could there be a true ancient architecture and carving master hidden in this tiny Deerold Town?
The restoration techniques used on the wooden house were extraordinary.
Just the joinery alone was something she’d never seen before.
This was the true, ancient craftsmanship described in the old texts.
Perfectly seamless.
Like the whole building was one single piece.
Not even the smallest gap could be seen.
It was honestly shocking.
Alina didn’t really get the talk about ancient craftsmanship or joinery.
She just felt that the roof of the wooden house was stunning, with a unique charm.
The windows and other parts, though, were still worn and damaged.
