Chapter 45 I’m Broke
Scarlett worked fast.
Like, really fast.
So fast that everyone thought she was just scratching the wood for fun.
About five minutes later, she blew the dust away.
A delicate, lifelike carving of the Virgin Mary appeared before everyone.
It showed only the head and shoulders, but the carving was s strands of hair.
It was impossible to look away.
It was shocking.
She looked alive.

Her eyes were half–open, gazing at the world with sorrow and compassion.
The world was full of suffering.
And the Virgin Mary showed boundless compassion.
Looking at it made everyone stop breathing for a second.
Some of them even felt sad, like they could feel her sorrow and mercy toward the world.
“T–this…” Sophia reached out, her hands shaking, wanting to touch it.
Scarlett felt that Sophia must have had a hard life in her past life.
She handed the carving to her. “This is for you.”
“F–for me?”
Sophia lifted her wrinkled, tear–stained face. She was shocked and couldn’t believe it.
Scarlett nodded.
She could tell Sophia truly loved these wood carvings and old architecture.
This was her way of making up for the past.
In her past life, if Rory hadn’t been fighting with Luke by the river, Milo wouldn’t have been pushed into the
water.
In a way, Rory was partly responsible for how everything went down.
Sophia carefully took the wooden carving. She planned to paint it when she got home and store it safely.

With skills like this, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call it a masterpiece.
Scarlett glanced at Milo again, then said to the still slightly confused Alina, “If Milo’s okay, I’ll head out?
Alina asked without thinking, “Ms. Sanchez, where are you going?”
“Back to the city. I have to film a show again tomorrow.”
Alina suddenly remembered.
Oh right! She almost forgot Scarlett was a celebrity.
And a regular on that show Faces of the Crowd.
Alina quickly handed the gifts she was holding to Scarlett. “Ms. Sanchez, thank you so much. Please take these.”
Scarlett didn’t refuse and accepted them.
Seeing Scarlett about to leave, Sophia finally snapped out of it.
“Ms. Sanchez, are you leaving already? Can I get your contact? I still have something I’d like to talk to you about.
“You see, there are many old buildings in our country that are badly damaged because of age. We’ve wanted to restore them, but it’s very hard.
“The main structures and foundations are already weakened. One wrong move and everything could fall apart. And nowadays, many people don’t have the skills anymore. Many techniques have been lost. Even when people try to restore them, it just doesn’t look right. Would you be able to restore them?”
Before meeting Scarlett, Sophia thought these historic buildings–silent witnesses to history–would eventually crumble away over time.
“I can,” Scarlett said. Then she paused and asked, “But is there pay?”
Restoring national heritage sites could be considered part–time work.
There should be a salary, right?
I’m broke.
Sophia was caught off guard.
Someone with that level of carving skill and restoration expertise is broke?
Just the wooden Virgin Mary she carved could sell for a high price.
“Yes, definitely. The government gives subsidies! For each restoration project, the bonus is at least 50,000 to
100,000.”
She wasn’t lying.

Those subsidies did exist.
They just had to be applied for.
