A flash of caution flickered in Nathalie’s eyes.
Was he really here just to corner her? Did he actually come all the way to take back the earrings for Felice?
She tensed, inching toward the exit. Ignoring him sounded ideal, but the hallway was so narrow and with his long legs, he barely had to move to block her way. There was no escape unless he let her go.
Nathalie shot him a cold, sarcastic look. “What do you want? Couldn’t stand having dinner with your second wife?”
Lance’s jaw tightened, his handsome features emotionless, brows drawing together. “You know saying these things hurts both of us, so why say them at all?”
She scoffed, her voice dripping with ridicule. “Isn’t that the truth? Why are you here?”
Lance just stared at her for a moment, eyes dark and focused. Without a word, he pulled out a small box from his pocket and held it out.
She glanced at the box but refused to take it, arms folded, face icy. “What are you trying to do?”
Lance caught her hand, pressed the box into her palm, and said quietly, “Nathalie, I just want to settle things with her. She’s the one who saved me.”
“That’s a lie! I was the one who saved you!”
With a trembling hand, Nathalie hurled the box aside. That sharp sarcasm vanished, replaced by a look so tight, so full of hurt, it almost cracked. She looked like she might shatter any second.
Lance’s brows furrowed even more. “I’ve had it all investigated, Nathalie. You saved someone back then, but it wasn’t me.”
“Bullshit!”
She refused to believe a single word. Every detail was burned into her memory. She was certain. The person she’d saved had been him. Yet now, he saw Felice as the hero. And here he was, ready to repay Felice with everything.
What a joke.
Nathalie forced herself to take a deep breath and cool down. “Lance, if there’s something I want, I’d rather tear it to pieces than see Felice get it. And you? Don’t even think about trying to take it from me for her.”
With that, she pushed past him, barely glancing back.
Damaris made a face, rolling her eyes. “That’s disgusting. What happened to him? Is everyone who gets near Felice somehow cursed or what?”
Her parents had acted the same. Now even the man Nathalie once loved had fallen into the same pattern.
Nathalie sighed, rubbing her temples. “Maybe Felice and I were just never meant to get along.”
Either she’d destroy Felice or Felice would destroy her. That was how it felt.
“Don’t stress out,” Damaris said, putting an arm around her. “I’ve got someone looking into it, okay? We’ll get the truth soon. Let’s just eat for now and ignore anyone and anything that makes us miserable.”
“Yeah… okay.”
Night settled in even deeper. Nathalie headed home feeling drained, only to spot Daniel waiting for her at the entrance to her building.
He couldn’t get through the security gate, so he stood outside, looking pale and tired, his eyes following her every move with a heavy, brooding stare.
