“You!”
Daniel’s voice trembled with anger as he stared at her, disappointment all over his face.
Nathalie hated it when he looked at her that way. It was like she’d done something unforgivable. All she’d done was protect herself, stand up for herself so she wouldn’t get pushed around. Was that really so terrible?
Why did he look at her as if she was in the wrong? Did he think being a good daughter meant letting Felice have whatever she wanted, keeping quiet even when she was blamed or bullied?
Sorry, but that just wasn’t her.
The living room fell into a heavy silence.
An unreadable look passed through Daniel’s eyes before he finally spoke. “Nathalie, you get one or the other. The company shares or the sapphire earrings. Pick one.”
Nathalie let out a sharp laugh, more out of frustration than amusement. “And why should I have to choose? I’m the Blair family’s real daughter. Blair Group is already mine. My husband paid for the sapphires, so they’re mine too. Why am I the one who has to pick?”
Daniel’s tone dropped even lower, his eyes going cold. “This isn’t up for discussion. I’m offering you two choices, not a debate. The paperwork for the shares isn’t done yet. I can take them back anytime, so think it over.”
He turned to leave.
Nathalie clenched her fists, refusing to back down. “The sapphire earrings were something my grandmother always wanted. I won’t hand them over. And the shares… I’m not giving those up either.”
Daniel paused, eyebrows pulled together. “Your grandmother wanted those earrings?”
Nathalie nodded. “Yeah. She told me once—they were a memento between her and Grandpa. She lost them by accident years ago and she’s always missed them. I finally found them, so of course I want to give them back to her.”
Daniel frowned in confusion. “Your mom never said anything about that.”
If it was something Camilla’s mother cherished, wouldn’t she have mentioned it?
Daniel just grunted in agreement.
…
The next morning, Nathalie walked into her manager’s office to ask for a few days off.
By coincidence, Addis passed by at that exact moment and heard just enough to get concerned. He frowned at her. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“I need to visit the next city. I’ll be back in three days,” Nathalie answered.
She was planning to deliver the sapphire earrings to her grandmother.
Addis shook his head immediately. “No way. This project is on a tight timeline. We’re already rushing as it is. If you’re gone for three days, how are you going to make up for all that lost time?”
