Camilla’s eyes flickered for a second. “What? I don’t know what you mean,” she said, her voice unsteady.
Nathalie stepped closer, looking right at her. “Mom, you know very well Grandma desperately wants to get those sapphire earrings back. Why did you tell Dad there was nothing to it? Don’t you care about how much it matters to her?”
The intensity in Nathalie’s eyes made Camilla uneasy. She frowned, put the scissors down on the table with a loud click, and tried to collect herself.
“This isn’t your business,” Camilla said, her tone suddenly chilly.
Nathalie stared at her, confused and hurt. “Why not? Those earrings were Grandpa and Grandma’s promise to each other. She’s been hoping to find them for years. You’re her daughter. Why would you refuse to help her?”
“I told you, stop asking!” Camilla’s voice was sharp now. “A promise? Give me a break. That’s nonsense!”
Nathalie looked at her, completely taken aback. “Mom, where is this coming from?”
Camilla turned away, staring out of the window. She took a few deep breaths, then finally looked back at Nathalie, her voice firmer but quieter. “Those sapphire earrings aren’t Grandma’s. She never should have had them. Give them to Felice instead.”
Nathalie blinked, feeling like she couldn’t trust her own ears.
How could Camilla say that? Her own mother… against Grandma?
Never should have had them? They’re not hers?
It took her a minute to recover. When she spoke, her voice was soft and uncertain. “Mom, can you explain what you’re saying?”
Camilla’s expression soured. “Let it go, Nathalie. Just do what I say. Did you bring the earrings with you today?”
Camilla just stood there as Nathalie left, her face twisted with complicated feelings. She bit her lip, then finally blurted out, “Those earrings belonged to your grandfather and his first love. Your grandmother saw them and claimed they were hers. What else could you call that but stealing?”
Nathalie froze in the doorway, stunned. She turned back around, her voice shaking. “What are you even saying?”
Camilla let out a sigh, shaking her head. “I didn’t want to talk about this. But she’s twisted your view of us. Now she’s using those earrings—earrings that never even belonged to her—to drive a wedge between us. I won’t cover for her anymore.”
Camilla took Nathalie’s hand and pulled her upstairs, closing the bedroom door behind them. She looked at Nathalie with a troubled, haunted expression and finally said, “Nathalie, your grandmother was the other woman.”
Nathalie shook her head in disbelief. “That can’t be true. There’s no way.”
Camilla’s voice was tight, her eyes darkening with shame. “I’ve kept my distance all these years because of her… because what she did has always embarrassed me.”
