The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 162

“Sure,” Nathalie agreed right away.

Who’d want to work for free anyway?

They left the company together and headed down to the parking garage. Gavin glanced at her, looking a little sheepish. “My new car won’t be ready for a few more days, so I’ll have to trouble you for a ride tonight.”

Nathalie blinked at him. “Wait, so you’re taking me out to dinner but I’m the one driving?”

Gavin just shrugged with a helpless look. “We could always call a cab if you prefer.”

Nathalie just stared at him, completely unamused, and then turned and unlocked her car. “Get in.”

Gavin wasted no time settling into the passenger seat. Soon, they were driving out of the garage.

From behind a big concrete pillar, Felice appeared, her phone in hand. She’d managed to snap a few photos of the whole scene. There was a sly little curl at the corner of her mouth as she sent them off, making sure they got delivered to Lance—without her name anywhere on it.

Nathalie picked a fancy restaurant on purpose, determined to make Gavin pay for a good meal. She went all out ordering, barely glancing up as she rattled off dish after dish.

Gavin watched her with a wry smile. “I see what you’re doing. Trying to eat your salary back in one meal? Are you sure you can handle all this?”

Nathalie handed the menu back to the waiter. “If I can’t finish, I’ll pack up the leftovers. Hope that’s not a problem.”

“No problem at all.”

After the waiter left, Nathalie looked at Gavin and asked, “Didn’t you say Felice was quitting? How come she’s still around?”

Gavin shook his head. “She told me herself she was leaving. Maybe she changed her mind. Who knows what she’s thinking?”

Nathalie dropped her gaze, amusement flickering across her eyes. That woman never missed a chance to put on a show. Who knew what she was up to now?

Gavin hesitated for a second, then went for it. “Nathalie, is everything okay between you and Lance?”

She raised her eyebrows. “Why are you asking? Don’t tell me you’ve got a thing for him.”

“Of course not,” Gavin replied, sounding completely sincere. “Lance is a good guy, but if you want a divorce that badly, you must have your reasons. I trust you.”

Something in his words touched Nathalie. She flashed him a grateful smile. “Thanks for understanding.”

Gavin smiled back, warm and reassuring. “You’re my employee, Nathalie. I’m always on your team.”

Right then, a familiar, booming voice interrupted. “Nathalie! What are the odds? Fancy running into you here!”

Bagot strolled over in the loudest floral shirt in existence, dragging out the chair right next to Gavin and plopping down without a care.

He looked Gavin up and down. “So, who’s your friend?”

Nathalie frowned, just a little, but kept her tone civil. “This is my department manager, Gavin.”

Bagot slapped his knee and leaned in. “Nathalie, you have got to be careful these days. Workplaces are jungles now. Some people seem fine on the surface, but you never know what they’re hiding behind that polite smile.”
