“You’re unbelievable!”
Leda listened, her imagination running wild with what Nathalie was saying, and her anger only grew. She pressed a hand to her chest, looking like she might faint from the rage.
Seeing how upset she was, Nathalie’s voice grew even calmer. “Lance can’t be with me every second of the day. All I need is a chance… and I promise, I won’t just sit quietly.”
“Nathalie!”
Lance’s jaw tensed and a vein stood out on his temple. His eyes were cold, nearly freezing as he stared her down.
Nathalie looked right back at him. “You should check on your grandmother. She looks like she’s about to pass out. Do you really want to be the reason something happens to her?”
Lance’s face darkened. “That’s enough. Stop talking.”
Nathalie lifted her eyebrows. Still disagreeing? He might lock her in here, but was he really going to stop her from speaking too?
She turned to Leda. “Isn’t Jasper only three?”
“Lance!”
Leda couldn’t handle any more of this. She shot Lance a furious look, wanting him to do something.
Lance called in the security guards. They came in and took Leda out of the room, no matter how hard she struggled.
“You’re all out of your minds! All of you!”
Leda was furious but completely powerless.
The hospital room fell quiet again. Lance tugged at his shirt collar, trying to rid himself of the pressure in his chest. He walked over to Nathalie, and when he saw the disappointment on her face, his heart twisted.
He reached out, gently touching her cheek. “Nathalie, stop with the games. You’re willing to ruin your future just to get away from me? Think about what you’re doing.”
No one would make that choice unless they’d completely lost it. He knew she wasn’t that reckless.
“And if I want to,” his voice dropped even lower, colder, “you won’t even set foot in jail. Not for a second.”
Nathalie’s lashes trembled. She shoved his hand away, her eyes sparking with anger.
“Get some rest. I’ll come back later.”
Since Daniel had paid a visit to the Adams family, he needed to send his own little message in return.
He left the room without another word, his presence fading until Nathalie was alone. She sat at the edge of the hospital bed, eyes empty and unfocused.
Then her phone rang. Startled, she grabbed it and looked at the screen. Fabian was calling.
Hadn’t he gone overseas? Why was he back so soon?
“Hello, Fabian?” Her voice was raspy, tired.
Fabian sounded upbeat. “Nathalie, I’m back. Do you still want to push through with the divorce?”
Her grip on the phone tightened. Her breath caught in her throat. “But… if you help me, Lance will come after you.”
Fabian laughed softly. “That’s just who I am. The more people tell me not to do something, the more determined I get.”
