Nathalie couldn’t help but laugh at his joke. She let out a soft sigh. “But I don’t want to get you involved. If Lance really loses it, he’s ruthless.”
Fabian went quiet. Neither of them said a word for a few moments.
Eventually, he spoke up. “Nathalie, we go way back. We’re old classmates, remember? If you need help, of course I want to be there for you.”
Nathalie felt a gentle warmth inside her, and before she realized it, a small smile curved on her lips. She tried to keep it light. “Looks like I’ll owe you even more in legal fees, then. Being my divorce lawyer may actually be dangerous work.”
Fabian chuckled. “Relax. Worst he could do is have me kicked out of the country. Other than that, there’s not much he can pull.”
Nathalie’s grip on her phone tightened as she took a steadying breath, a new sense of determination in her eyes. “Alright then. Let’s go ahead with the divorce case.”
“Sounds good,” Fabian replied. “I’ve already got the paperwork together. Since you want to go through with this, I’ll have my team submit everything to court. Someone from the court will visit for mediation, and then it’ll all be out in the open. Just make sure you’re ready for that.”
“Okay.” Nathalie nodded, and her gratitude was clear. “Fabian, thank you. Really.”
Most people, after being warned off by Lance once, wouldn’t have dared to step in again. But Fabian was still willing to help.
She was truly grateful for him.
Fabian’s laugh came through the line, easy and warm. “So, how about treating me to a meal now? That’s a fair request, right?”
Nathalie let out a helpless little laugh. “Not now. I’m just… it’s not a good time.”
He gave in without a fight. “Alright then. Whenever you’re ready, just let me know. But I’ll be holding you to it.”
“Deal.”
Leda didn’t argue, not with Jasper in the room. Looking drained, she just went upstairs to her bedroom.
Susan, the caretaker, followed right after. Seeing the look on Leda’s face, she offered her opinion, “Honestly, Leda, the real problem is Nathalie. She’s got no class—always making a scene, never acting like a proper lady. In my opinion, she’s worlds apart from Felice.”
Leda pressed her fingers against her aching temples. “That troublemaker Lance just refuses to divorce her. What can I even do?”
Susan’s eyes sparkled with scheming intent. “Maybe there’s a way to make Lance want the divorce himself. I mean, if something were to happen to Nathalie—like with another man—would Lance still want her around?”
Leda gave Susan a cold, unreadable look and waved her off. “That’s enough. Leave me, please.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Susan answered before slipping quietly out of the room.
