“Let’s go to my office.”
Lance got up and took her hand, not giving her any room to argue.
“I’m not going.” Nathalie frowned and pulled her hand free. “I have work to do. My injury isn’t a big deal anymore, so could you please stop hovering?”
But Lance’s eyes locked onto her wrist. Her pale skin was bare. The purple diamond bracelet he gave her was missing.
His gaze grew darker and he asked in a deep, low voice, “Where’s the bracelet?”
Nathalie’s eyes darted away for a second. “I left it off. It just got in the way.”
He annoyed her. Everything he gave her just felt burdensome.
Lance’s chest tightened with frustration. His eyes looked even colder than before.
Nathalie checked the time. “I need to get back to work. As the CEO of The Adams Group, don’t you have anything better to do?”
He gave her a chilling look. “I’ll find out where the bracelet went. And if I do… Nathalie, I’ll make it your handcuffs. I’ll lock you at home so you won’t be able to go anywhere.”
Nathalie’s lashes fluttered in disbelief. “If you’re so crazy, maybe go see a doctor!”
She stormed out of the conference room. The second she got outside, she pulled out her phone and called Damaris.
“Hey, Nathalie, what’s up?” Damaris sounded extra cheerful. She had already found a buyer for the bracelet—thirty-three million. Not bad.
Nathalie couldn’t help sighing. “We can’t sell the bracelet anymore.”
“What? Why?” Damaris sounded confused.
“That psycho is about to flip out,” Nathalie said, “and honestly, none of us can deal with the fallout.”
Damaris deflated right away. Losing over fifteen million stung, but keeping her best friend safe came first. “Alright, if it keeps you out of trouble, I’ll drop it.”
After hanging up, Nathalie took a breath and headed straight to the recording studio.
Her friend left quickly. Nathalie turned her attention to the menu, but just as she started scoping out the options, someone gave the table a little knock.
“Nathalie, what a coincidence.”
That familiar warm voice, touched with a smile.
She looked up to see Freddy grinning at her. “Freddy, you eating here too?”
He nodded, glancing at the empty chair across from her. “Mind if I join you?”
“Not at all, sit down.” Nathalie smiled back. “Did you hear about their signature dish too?”
“Yeah, a friend told me to try it,” Freddy said, settling in. “I had a slow day at work, so thought I’d check it out. Never guessed I’d see you here. Must be fate.”
He gave her that easy, genuine smile, and for the first time all day, Nathalie felt herself relax.
