Listening to her grandmother's gentle voice and feeling her soft hand soothingly rub her back, Nathalie felt tears sting her nose. For a second, she almost burst out crying.
Still, she managed to hold herself together. With a dull ache in her chest, she mumbled, “Grandma, Lance and I are getting a divorce.”
Adelaide looked at her in shock, worry flickering across her face. “What happened? How did things get to this point?”
She thought it was probably just a little argument—nothing their years together couldn’t fix.
For Adelaide, divorce just didn’t seem possible after everything they'd been through.
Nathalie kept her head down, voice tight and low. “I just don’t love him anymore. I don’t want to be with him.”
Adelaide let out a soft sigh and settled back, her voice calm and certain. “Then get a divorce.”
Nathalie blinked, taken aback. She finally lifted her head and looked at her grandmother. “You’re not against it?”
Adelaide’s heart ached seeing Nathalie’s red eyes and the tears pooled there. She gently brushed away those tears and said, “If you don’t love him, then something must have happened. If he’s hurt you, then let him go. If you feel wronged and sad, of course I’m with you. I’ll always take your side.”
Nathalie’s breath hitched and she let out a few broken sobs, then crumpled against her grandmother’s shoulder. “Grandma…”
Her voice was so raw, so full of pain, that it seemed to say everything she’d hidden these past weeks.
She thought she’d sob uncontrollably, but all she did was cry quietly. The tears ran down her cheeks as her body shook, her soft cries tugging at the heart.
Adelaide just let her get it all out. She waited, patient and quiet, not saying a word until Nathalie’s trembling eased and her breathing steadied.
When the moment passed, Adelaide spoke again. “Since you’re getting divorced, we shouldn’t stay in someone else’s home. Where do you live now?”
Nathalie wiped at her nose. Her eyes were puffy, but somehow, she looked brighter now, almost as if the tears had washed all the shadows away.
Adelaide’s smile never wavered, but there was a new distance in it now. “Don’t worry. We’ll get in the car right away. There’s barely any traffic at this time. We’ll be fine.”
Something in Lance’s eyes darkened.
Adelaide gathered her things. “It’s late. Get some rest.”
With that, she led Nathalie to the front door.
Lance couldn’t just let them go like that. He looked troubled and quietly got in his car, pulling out to follow them.
He followed behind until they reached the gate at The Observatory, where his car was stopped by security.
Pulling to the curb, he lit a cigarette. The smoke curled up around him as he sat in silence, his eyes growing ever more stormy and distant.
