Nathalie stared out at the pitch-black night. The world outside was so dark it felt like she was trapped at the bottom of a well, clawing up with no way out.
“I just don’t get it. Why won’t he let go? Isn’t it obvious enough that I don’t love him anymore?”
Fabian let out a short, bitter laugh. “He can’t accept it. It’s like he refuses to see the truth. He keeps telling himself you’re only being difficult. All the real problems, he ignores, like they’re invisible. Honestly, I don’t know what to say…”
Nathalie’s smile was more sad than anything else. “Doesn’t even matter now, does it? You went through so much because of my divorce, dealing with everything, and in the end, it was all for nothing. I’m really sorry.”
Fabian stayed quiet for a moment, then spoke up out of nowhere. “Don’t drop the lawsuit yet. Give me two days.”
Nathalie blinked in surprise. “Wait, what do you mean?”
“I might have a way to help you,” Fabian said.
Her heart, which had been numb for so long, suddenly started beating faster, hope flickering at the edges. Nathalie’s voice trembled. “Are you… seriously not joking?”
Even Freddy, who ran The Charles Group, couldn’t find an expert who could help. How could Fabian pull it off?
Fabian’s answer was vague. “Just wait a little. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”
“Okay,” Nathalie answered quietly.
What other choice did she have now? There really was nothing left. She just had to try, even if it felt hopeless.
Fabian hung up. Nathalie stood at the window for a long while before she finally went back to her grandmother’s hospital room.
She hadn’t gotten any decent sleep over the past couple of days. Still, hearing the surgery was finally happening, that her grandma might recover, loosened some tight knot in her chest. Curled up on the narrow bed, she managed to doze off.
Some time passed. In her half-sleep, she sensed someone sit down beside her, felt the weight of a jacket laid gently over her shoulders.
The familiar scent made her stomach twist.
She opened her eyes to find Lance sitting there, watching her, his dark eyes fixed on her face.
“Did I wake you?” His voice was soft, nearly a whisper.
Lance stared at her for a long time, taking in the way her face looked pale and guarded. He didn’t say anything else.
The next afternoon, Nathalie’s nerves were still stretched tight. Then William arrived, surprising her.
“We’re moving your grandma’s surgery up. It’ll be in an hour. I need your signature here.”
Nathalie froze. She hadn’t expected him to change the date at the last minute. But this was actually a good thing. He was going against Lance’s plan and having the surgery done sooner.
She grabbed the pen and signed immediately. There wasn’t even time to ask questions before William had someone wheel her grandma away for final checks.
The moment Lance heard, a deep scowl settled on his face. He pulled out his phone and called William.
“What’s going on? The surgery was supposed to be tomorrow.”
William answered calmly. “Lance, Adelaide’s condition isn’t looking good. Waiting longer would hurt her chances. If something happens to her, things between you and Nathalie will only get worse, won’t they? That’s not what you want, is it?”
