Lance’s face was clouded with frustration. He had made plans with William and everything was supposed to go a certain way. Now, all of a sudden, William changed the schedule without even bothering to let him know.
He kept his voice low but serious. “Who talked to you?”
William tensed up. Lance really was sharp. But he couldn’t say anything.
“I need to get to the operating room. If there’s anything to discuss, we can do it after the surgery.” He ended the call right away.
Lance sat in silence for a moment, narrowed eyes filled with suspicion, then called Aaron to come in.
Aaron stepped in, looking confused. “Did you need me for something, Lance?”
“Find out who’s been in contact with William these past two days and what they discussed,” Lance said quietly.
Aaron nodded, still a little lost, but left to do as he was told.
Lance got up and headed straight for the hospital.
Outside the operating room, Nathalie was sitting on a chair, anxiously glancing at the doors every few seconds. She looked like she hadn’t even noticed anyone else nearby.
Lance walked over and took the seat beside her. “Nathalie, what did you do?”
Nathalie stiffened. “What do you mean? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I paid William a lot. He shouldn’t have gone against me.” He paused, watching her carefully. “Did someone help you, Nathalie?”
She was just as puzzled, but suddenly remembered something Fabian had said. Was it possible he’d done something? But how? How could Fabian pull this off, managing to go around Lance and get William to change the plan for her grandmother’s surgery?
Nathalie’s eyes flickered for a second before she replied. “I honestly don’t know.”
Her tone was cold. She didn’t owe Lance anything anymore. Her grandma was finally in surgery, she could breathe again without the pressure of his threats, and she had no reason to pretend to be nice.
She also wasn’t even thinking about dropping her lawsuit.
For a moment, William looked at her like he was trying to solve a complicated puzzle. He suddenly asked, “I don’t think I ever got your name?”
“I’m Nathalie,” she said simply.
William seemed briefly confused. The name didn’t seem familiar to him, but he remembered the strict instructions he’d been given. Whoever had called in the favor had demanded that Nathalie’s requests be prioritized. What kind of connection did she have to wield that kind of influence?
Noticing that he was staring, William quickly collected himself. “I’m really tired. I’m heading out for the night. You can thank me again some other time.”
“Alright,” Nathalie answered softly, distracted. She didn’t see any of the complicated thoughts flickering across his face. Her focus was set on her grandmother, who had just been wheeled out of surgery.
Adelaide was unconscious, her head carefully wrapped in white gauze, but she was breathing steadily.
Once they got back to the hospital room and the nurse had left, Nathalie pulled out her phone and dialed Fabian’s number.
He picked up with a light, knowing chuckle, as if he’d been waiting for her call. “Hey, is the surgery over?”
