The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 263

“It’s all done, and it went perfectly,” Nathalie said, unable to hide her happiness. “Fabian, how did you even manage it? You’ve really saved me this time.”

Fabian chuckled. “As long as Adelaide’s alright, that’s what matters. Seriously, don’t mention it. We’re friends, aren’t we? That’s what friends do, they help each other.”

Nathalie’s appreciation was almost overwhelming. “If only I could have ten more friends like you.”

Fabian teased, “Are you trying to put in a bulk order or what?”

That made Nathalie laugh. “I mean it, thank you so much. I owe you big time.”

She said it with this rare level of seriousness.

Fabian just brushed it off. “It’s really nothing, but if it’ll ease your conscience, you could always double my fee. That work for you?”

Nathalie didn’t hesitate. “Deal.”

Now that her worries were out of the way and Lance had no more leverage, it felt like a huge weight had lifted. Nathalie hung up and sat by the hospital bed, unable to stop herself from smiling.

Out in the hall, Lance leaned against the wall, listening to the voices drifting out from the room.

Fabian? So Fabian’s the one who helped her?

Since when did he have that kind of pull? Why didn’t he know about it?

Lance’s eyes darkened. Clearly, there was something happening beneath the surface he wasn’t seeing.

His phone buzzed. He picked up and walked further down the corridor.

Aaron’s voice came through, low and steady. “Lance, I had someone hack into William’s phone and his computer. Looks like there was an overseas email this morning, but it got deleted—and the address is wiped clean too.”

Lance arched an eyebrow. “So you’re saying you found nothing?”

Aaron paused for a second. “…That’s about it.”

Lance pulled over a chair and sat. He didn’t seem bothered by her attitude, watching her out of the corner of his eye every now and again.

His presence was impossible to ignore. Nathalie shot him a glare. “Can you please leave? You’re just bothering both me and my grandma.”

Lance just replied calmly, “Grandma seems to be resting well.”

Nathalie couldn’t even come up with a response.

Right then, his phone began to vibrate. She glanced at him, half-smiling, as if to say, “Aren’t you going to go tend to that?”

Lance checked the screen, saw that Madonna was calling, and his brow pinched. Still, he answered. “Yeah? What is it?”

“Lance.”

But the voice on the other end was a kid—Jasper’s.
