The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 264

Lance’s eyebrows relaxed a little, and his voice turned warmer. “Jasper, what’s up?”

“Lance, are you coming home?” Jasper’s voice was small and shaky, the words tumbling out in pieces. “I miss you.”

Lance sighed. “Not tonight. It’s late. You should get some sleep. Listen to Grandma and your mom, okay?”

“But I miss you…” Jasper pressed, stubbornness creeping into his tone. “Can you come back and stay with me?”

“No,” Lance shot back, not even pausing. “You’ve got great-grandma, grandma, and your mom with you. I’m staying with Nathalie right now.”

Jasper went silent.

A minute later, Lance heard rustling on the other end, then Madonna’s tired voice. “Jasper really misses you, you know. You haven’t been home for days. He just wants to see you.”

Lance arched an eyebrow. “Mom, is it really him missing me, or are you just tired of watching him?”

“Oh, quit with the nonsense,” Madonna huffed, clearly annoyed. “He’s my grandson. Why wouldn’t I want to take care of him?”

“Then why’d you let him use your phone to call me?” Lance let out a soft snort. “Mom, if you miss Dad and want to go visit him, just be honest.”

“You little brat,” Madonna snapped. “You’ve got time to joke around when your wife’s about to leave you?”

And with that, she hung up.

Lance stared at his phone in silence. His face grew cold, and he tucked the phone away. When he looked up, he found Nathalie watching him, her eyes heavy with disappointment.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said quietly.

Nathalie didn’t answer. She curled up on the little hospital bed and fell asleep.

Lance just sat in his chair, quietly watching her. She was too tired to notice.

The next morning, Adelaide finally woke up. The brain surgery had left her groggy, her words slurred and her mind still foggy.

Nathalie leaned close and spoke softly by her ear. “Grandma, everything’s okay now. Just rest. I’ll take care of you.”

Addis let out a huge sigh of relief. “Thank goodness. I’ll be waiting.”

After a few more words, he headed out.

Nathalie noticed her grandma watching her, so she explained that work was piling up and she still had a lot left to handle.

Adelaide could finally manage short sentences. “You’re busy. Don’t… worry about me.”

“I’ll get three nurses to help you,” Nathalie promised. “If anything feels wrong, just tell me as soon as I’m back.”

“Okay,” Adelaide said, not objecting.

After packing up at home, Nathalie went back to work the next morning.

Work was intense all day. That evening, she hurried to the hospital, only to find Camilla sitting inside. The three caregivers were nowhere in sight.

Nathalie rushed up to her, not bothering to hide her frustration. “Why are you here?”
