Daniel’s brows knit together. “Why do you even care?”
“No.” Nathalie didn’t hesitate. “Pull our money out. Right now.”
Daniel shot her a glare. “What are you even saying? What’s so wrong about starting a company for Felice? It’s not like it affects you.”
“I’m not letting this happen.” Nathalie folded her arms, eyes cold. “She’s only the adopted daughter. Why does she get to spend our family’s money?”
A faint, bitter laugh slipped out. “Did you all forget the Blair Group was almost wiped out not that long ago?”
Her voice was sharp, the kind of threat that made Daniel’s face darken. He was still haunted by everything that happened last time, the endless sleepless nights, the board doubting every move he made. He would do anything to avoid that mess again.
Even so...
Daniel’s jaw tightened as he looked Nathalie in the eye. “Lance was the one who made this happen. He’s invested as well. Nathalie, after all that’s gone on, you keep hurting Felice. We just want to give her something in return. Why can’t you let it go?”
Inside, Nathalie scoffed. Seriously? Lance still hadn’t gotten over his sister-in-law? They couldn’t compensate her in other ways, so they gave her a company, fed her projects, kept her comfortable? All those stunts just to avoid a divorce—it was almost funny.
She took a breath and steadied herself. “Fine, then I’ll talk to Lance too. I’ll make him pull out of the deal. Bottom line, I don’t agree with starting a company for her. I don’t care what you say. She doesn’t deserve it.”
“Nathalie!” Camilla couldn’t take it anymore. She got to her feet and moved right up to Nathalie. “Why do you have to make Felice your enemy? She’s not even around you anymore. Can’t you just let it go and show some kindness for once?”
The frail voice broke the tension. Adelaide lay in her hospital bed, looking paler than ever. “Are you all just ganging up on Nathalie?”
Camilla and Daniel both froze, faces draining of color.
Camilla rushed to the bedside, desperate to explain. “Mom, that’s not it at all. Nathalie’s just being unreasonable. She’s always clashed with Felice, even shoved her down the stairs not long ago. Felice didn’t tell a soul, but we thought it was time to finally make things right with her. Nathalie blew it all up. Mom, please, talk some sense into her. It’s just a company, it barely costs us anything, there’s no point holding a grudge.”
Nathalie’s answer came out flat. “I didn’t push her. And honestly, it wasn’t me picking a fight all these years. Felice was always setting me up. I only ever tried to protect myself.”
“See, Mom? Even now she’s making excuses.” Camilla pressed her lips together, her whole face drawn and worried. “I really just… I don’t know what to do anymore.”
