Nicol grinned and nodded. "Yeah, those guys were total lightweights. Barely broke a sweat taking care of them."
Nathalie couldn't help but laugh along with Nicol's big, carefree laugh. For the first time in a long while, she felt like no one could mess with her anymore.
...
Two battered bodyguards, faces bruised and swollen, stood silently in front of Lance, not daring to meet his eyes.
Lance pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and looked at them with calm indifference, his gaze sharp and unreadable.
A heavy silence hung in the air. The bodyguards bowed their heads and finally spoke. "Nathalie's driver caught us. Before we could even react, he already..." Their voices trailed off.
Lance interrupted, "You can go."
Relief washed over their faces. The boss wasn't angry. They hurried out, still limping as they left.
Lance looked in the direction where Nathalie's car had vanished. She had someone powerful on her side now. Why had he never heard of this person before?
He took out his phone and made a call. As soon as the other person answered, he asked, "Did you handle what I asked?"
"Of course," replied the voice on the other end, lazy and unconcerned. "The guy's already in Cabinda. He should be in touch with your wife by now, right?"
Lance's voice was cool. "I want to meet him."
A laugh came through the line. "What, you don't trust me now? If you don't trust my guy, just don't use him."
Lance said simply, "I might have met him already. I just need to make sure."
There was a brief pause, then the caller laughed again, a little more interested. "Alright, that's fun. I'll send over his info, and you can reach out yourself."
"Fine."
Lance ended the call, finished his smoke, and felt his phone buzz. The file had come through. He looked at the photo, eyes narrowing at the rough, striking face staring back at him.
Nicol.
So it really was him.
"Yes, of course."
Nathalie turned around and noticed Addis standing off to the side. He watched her, worry etched into his face.
She walked over, genuinely confused. "Addis, what's going on?"
He hesitated, struggling for words. Finally, after a long pause, he quietly asked, "You're really going to finish this project with us, right?"
That made Nathalie laugh. She nodded, "Of course I am. Don't worry."
She always took her work seriously.
Addis finally exhaled, relief softening his worried expression.
What kind of money could she even make from filming a TV series? Before, he used to think that her paycheck wouldn't even cover one of her salon treatments. Now he realized he might have been way off. Maybe it wasn't even enough for a manicure.
Either way, he decided that from now on, he'd make sure to treat her right. The project was almost done, and if she suddenly bailed, they'd all be in trouble.
